NUR 601 Theory and Research in Nursing Topic Review Table

Fall 2016

Guidelines —Students will select a focus topic area in nursing administration and leadership practice and review recent progress in this particular topic. The table will summarize the current state of knowledge on the topic using the template provided and will serve as the basis for the Research Utilization EBP Project Paper. The table will be part of the appendix of the RU/EBP Project Paper.

The topic review table will consist of a list several original articles on the sante topic to produce a complete summary of the current content on the topic. This topic review table can be used for coherent arguments about the topic or focus area in the field; an interpretation of the primary literature on the subject; students' conclusions based upon a synthesis of the results from several primary literature papers.

Purpose - to succinctly review recent progress in a particular topic by locating, critiquing, and summarizing the findings presented in recent research papers.

Ultimate Goal - Synthesize the results from several primary literature papers to produce a coherent argument about a topic or focused description of a field for the Research Utilization/Evidence Based Research Paper.

The emphasis is to obtain and interpret the primary literature on the subject. You need to read several original research articles on the same topic and make your own conclusions about the meanings of those papers when you include them in the Research Utilization/Evidence-Based Practice Paper.

Instructions —

1. This assignment requires you to complete four items. Three items will be in the Excel document and one will be a WORD document.

a. EXCEL document i. Identify a topic or focus area in nursing administration or leadership that is

of interest to you. Listed in the yellow area of the first tab of the EXCEL file. Develop a question related to this topic or focus area — e.g. "What is the evidence that XXX interventions in AAA (individuals/area) effects a change in YYY [nursing administration/leadership focus topic]?"

ii. Complete the first tab with information related to each document you have reviewed, which comprises your topic review table.

iii. The second tab requires you to place the column number you used for each article, article title, and the associated hyperlink per article.

b. WORD document i. Prepare and APA reference page of all of the documents. You will turn in

this initial APA reference list when you submit you Topic Review Table file. Both will have a Dropbox in the Assessment area of D2L. This will come in very handy when you complete your paper. For the paper, you will add any additional references you required to document sources for any statements to support your position.

Fall 2016 2. The third and fourth tabs of the EXCEL file contain the quality and level parameters for

your review. Each article entry will require you to judge the article on quality and level. 3. Research current sources — refer to PPT for source suggestions listed in D2L to assist

your search. 4. Use the EXCEL template for the table. Articles should be listed in alphabetical order in

the columns. When saving your document in this template, use your last name and topic table so that the file will look the following example the file extension:

each article. This column is frozen in place so that it is visible as the student scrolls columns left and right.

6. Complete "Supporting Evidence Summary Table Template" and use as a working document for your Research Utilization/Evidence Based Research Paper

REQUIREMENTS REGARDING ASSIGNED PAPERS:

Final grades for this class will be based upon your performance in group discussions/class participation and assignments.

Class Absences - Unless you have contacted me beforehand or as soon as possible and have explained the special circumstances, absences of two or more weeks and/or no communication for two weeks may result in a failing grade for the course.

All papers and assignments are to be submitted to the Dropbox. Papers will be initially assessed using plagiarism detection to determine originality. Papers must include primary sources and class readings as citations and in the reference list; and must use the APA Manual 6th edition for style, proper grammar, punctuation and sentence structure is expected. Save all of your formal assignments in Microsoft Word. Remember to always back up your work on a disk or flash drive and make a hard copy for your files before submitting your work

Late papers: Failure to submit assignments on time will result in lowering the student's final grade by 10% for each late submission for two days following the due date; no grade will be given beyond that time period. Exceptions may be made on a case-by-case basis if the student notifies the instructor prior to the due date. Incomplete preparation for group work and/or inadequate group participation in one or more assignments (as noted by the peer group and/or faculty member) will result in the loss of points. Total lack of discussion or contribution to any group assignment will result in "0" grade for that individual grade. Final grades for this class will be based upon your performance in group discussions, class participation and assignments. The assignments require weekly class attendance and readings.

Papers/Assignments:

General Guidelines - proper grammar, punctuation and sentence structure is expected. Save all of your formal assignments as Microsoft Office documents. • APA Style - Unless instructed otherwise, prepare and submit papers according to the most current edition of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA). For this course, papers do not require the APA's use of Author's Notes and Abstracts.

• Dropbox Submissions - Papers must be submitted to the correct Dropbox as a Word (.doc or .docx) single document only per assignment. As a student, CAL U provides you with Office 360 at no charge. Your Topic Table is required in an EXCEL document. The template is provided. ALL required papers and documents must be uploaded to the correct D2L Dropbox or Discussion Board as specified in the course. Do not send any assignments as an email attachment or fax.

• Originality Check — All papers submitted to the D2L Dropbox will automatically be assessed using originality/plagiarism detection to determine originality. If your Originality Score indicates that you have copied content from an outside source without proper citation, you may be asked to rewrite the paper or you may receive a "0" score. Remember to read for content and use your own words as much as possible when you write in the Discussion Board and in your assigned papers. If you are directly quoting in a discussion board, you MUST cite the reference. Papers cannot contain quoted material. Quoted sentence fragments, full sentences, and paragraphs or plagiarized information will receive "0" total points. Originality scores must be 20% or less for paraphrasing information that is correctly cited. Quoting a term an author/theorist uses, such as a variable name must be appropriately cited and confoim with APA style.

Research Utilization EBP Project Paper (150 points) — Students will identify a researchable issue/problem in nursing administration or leadership, include an underlying theoretical framework, and analyze research evidence for its potential application to the chosen nursing administration and leadership practice issue/problem through a critical critique of supporting evidence sources. Relationships among the focus area, research problem, and the available research and supporting evidence, will be synthesized through the development of a RU/EBP implementation and evaluation plan.

other internal and external practices. • NOTE: Include the Topic Review Table as an Appendix and review each of the

articles for their relevance, etc. This is graded separately.
