We have looked at a number of Autobiographical and Observational essays. Each essay uses descriptive language and emotional appeal to convey a specific message to the reader.
What You Will Be Doing:
For this assignment, you will be writing about a person, place, or artifact that is significant in defining who you are. Chose a specific moment or memory and create a narrative that shows the significance of your choice. How has this person/place/thing changed your life or life perspective? Be sure you put some thought into your choice and that it contains enough substance that you will be able to write about it at length. Focus your narrative down to a 24 hour period, even if the overall topic spans over a greater length of time (ex: If graduating high school was a defining moment, instead of writing a chronological journey through multiple grades, choose a specific memory that represents the significance of your choice, such as the graduation ceremony).
While you can use “I” and “We” for this paper and the formal tone will not be as strict as other assignments for this class, I do expect a professional and polished voice. Avoid slang and be sure your language is consistent with the tone of your paper (ie. A paper dealing with a gritty subject matter may be justified in using rawer language as a creative choice). If you are not sure if the tone is appropriate, meet with me to discuss the topic.
What I Will Be Grading On
· Your ability to tell an engaging story that is within a 24 hour period (flashbacks are an exception).
· Your ability to use sensory detail, metaphor, and simile, and to show, rather than tell, the details of your narrative.
· Your ability to clearly show the purpose and significance of the narrative.
· Your ability to demonstrate a clear understanding of autobiographical and observational essays.
· Your ability to produce a clear, interesting, and organized introduction.
· Your ability to maintain the organization established in the introduction throughout the paper.
· Your ability to produce a polished draft. While I do not expect grammatical perfection, I do expect the draft to be proofread. Sloppiness will result in a lower grade.
· Take a draft to the Writing Center and discuss it with a tutor. Bring me a sheet signed by the tutor with your comments on what you worked on. This will be worth 15 points towards the paper’s grade. These are easy points to earn or to lose.
· The paper must be 3-4 pages, using proper MLA format specified in the syllabus. Ignoring the format and length requirements will result in a lower grade
Important Dates
· First draft is due [09/08] at the beginning of class. Bring three copies to class. Email submissions are not acceptable.
· Final draft is due [09/15], again at the beginning of class.
