What is Sufism? Where did it come from? What did the Shias and Sunnis think of it?
· Sufism is a mystical movement
· Something in common with the Shia movement
· Shiism moved more toward the Sufi’s ideas
· Mysticism – emotional connection with God
· An emotional connection with God is achieved with meditation, dance, intense physical activity, etc.
· Sufis teach students the teachings of Sufism
· Well developed theology
· The Sufi leaders are going to be much more effective
· If one claims to be Muslim, one has to be excepted by one
· Each Sufi leader will be unique
· Two groups of Sufis
· For a philosopher the source of truth is logic
· For a Muslim the source of truth is the Koran
Abbasids / Sunnis / Shias / Sufis
· Abbasid’s culture is important

· Cannot reject logic; need logic to understand the Koran
