Standard Atmosphere

Reading Assignment: pp 475-483 of reference text supplied in Blackboard (“Airplane Performance

Stability and Control”) for review of model development

Analysis Assignment:

Develop a computer program to determine the properties of a standard atmosphere for altitudes from 0

ft. to 80,000 ft.

The program should have the additional ability to input alternate temperatures to determine non-

standard conditions. This should include incremental variations of the standard temperature (in +/-

degrees C) and or design point temperature (in degrees F). (See EXCEL example in Blackboard.)

1) for the standard atmosphere calculate and tabulate the atmospheric properties for the specified

range of altitudes:

Properties: pressure altitude, pressure ratio, temperature ratio, density ratio, pressure,

temperature, absolute viscosity, kinematic viscosity and speed of sound (all in English units)

Altitudes: the range of altitudes from 0-80,000 ft., in 10,000 ft. increments, include one

additional calculation point at the tropopause (36,089 ft.)

2) using the standard atmosphere calculate and tabulate, for the specified altitudes, the properties

(as in 1) for the prescribed temperature variations:

a) for a pressure altitude of 0 ft., delta temperatures of +10oC, +20oC, +30oC (wrt standard)

b) for a pressure altitude of 4,000 ft., 95oF, and a delta temperature of 27.924oC
