My research study is addressing the issue of gender pay gap. My research seeks to find out the existing disparities in pay between men and women in the place of work. Despite similar qualifications and similar abilities to do some jobs, there exist a significant gap between these two genders. This paper will research the causes of this gcap. Is there justification for this disparity? This research will investigate whether the gap is widening with time or there is hope of reducing this gap of pay between men and women in places of work Comment by jeknight: Please rewrite your assignent without the use of “my” and “I”As mentioned throughout this course, research assignments should not be written in first person
The dependentd variable for this research will be gender pay gap while the independent variables will be education level, experience, job occupation, tenure of current job and marital status. The depended variable gender pay gap can be defined as the difference between median compensation between men and women in relation to median compensation of men. Experience can be defined practical knowledge and wisdom gained from working in particular profession for a certain period of time. Job occupation can be defined as the means of earning a living. Tenure of current job can be defined operationally as the duration a worker has stayed in a particular kind of profession. Marital status can be defined of the state of person being married, single, separated, widowed or divorced.
My sample will include the following kind of employees’ characteristics; married men and women working in the same profession so as to find out whether there exists difference in their earning, unmarried men and women working in the same profession so as to find out whether there is disparity in their pay as compared to married men and women. (Amuedo-Dorantes &, Rica, 2006).
I will also include men and women with the same education level working in different occupation so as to find out how selection of occupation affects disparity in pay for both genders. I would include long serving stuffs in particular profession to try and evaluate how tenure of current job has affected pay of either gender, I would also seek to find which gender serves for many years in one profession. Finally, I will include both men and women workers with different education levels to evaluate how education level affect wage pay in both genders. (Rica, Dolado, & VLlorens, 2008)
My sample will be representative and will have equal number of men and women. To minimize the margin error I will use a large sample 1000 men workers and 1000 women workers totaling a sample of 2000. I will be targeting to have a 95% confidence level.
My sample will involve human population especially in working environment. The first step in my recruitment process will be identifying the appropriate sample which fits to my research objectives. I will then explain the purpose of my research to the potential participants in my sample; I will then recruit 2000 participants for my study. I will adhere to ethical practices throughout the process and will retain the participants to the end of my research.
I will use questionnaire as an instrument of raw data collection to be statistically analyzed. The questionnaire will have both closed and open ended questions. Questionnaires are likely to give more truthful information. This type so raw data collection will yield descriptive data and will contain both quantitative and qualitative data because my research will involve an analysis of both type of data.
I my informed consent, I will comprehensively explain to the potential respondent that the purpose of the research. I will also highlight the potential risks associated in participating in the research plus the benefit the respondent is likely to get from their participation in the research. I will also explain the procedure which will be used in the research. I will make it clear that it is research they are participating in and not therapy. (Council of Economic Advisers Issue Brief, 2015)
Some of the potential risks involved in this research include loss of time to the participants which may create some discomfort. Some participants especially women may feel inferior in the process of participating in the research as a result of pay gap in job. To minimize the risk of time management I will make my questionnaire as short as possible and use simple questions free from ambiguity. I will frame my question in such a way that they not imply existence of inferiority between men and women so as to minimize the risk of one gender feeling inferior of the other
Some of threats of threats to validity include differential selection. This can occur in selection of the sample when random selection is not used. One of main internal threat of validity is cause-effect inferences. It is possible that that some observation may not be as a result of the selected independent variable. Another threat of validity is experimental mortality. This is likely to occur when some respondent drop from the study before it is concluded. (Sherri, 2013)
The research uses non-parametric inferential statistic process. The research seeks to find out the sample median differs so much from the expected value. In this case, one sample median test will be used for inferential statistic test. The research also will use t-test which is a parametric inferential statistic to establish whether there is significant different between the mean of the two groups.
The acceptable alpha level which can be used to fail to reject of fail to accept the null hypothesis is 0.05. This is because at this level the chances making either a type 1 error or type 2 error are minimal.
