Unit V
Lesson 9: APA and Sources
Print Sources and Electronic Sources
The APA Reference List
As you learned in Unit III, Lesson 7, all academic work that uses outside sources must include in-text citations within the body of the work and correlating references to those citations at the end of the work. Those references are compiled in a reference list. That list must follow certain rules so that the reader can look at those sources directly for further reading relating to your work. General rules regarding the formatting of references and the reference list can be found on pages 7, 8, and 9 of the Columbia Southern Citation Guide. You can access the Citation Guide on the CSU Student Portal by going to the Success Center page and clicking on Resources, then Writing, and finally APA. You can also access the document at the following link.
APA Reference Page: Print Sources
Print sources are those that appear in a format on paper: books, magazines, periodicals, journals, newspapers, all media that come under this huge category. At one time, these were the only available sources, but over the years, microfilm, microfiche, and ultimately digital storage became less expensive, more available, and much less vulnerable to the ravages of time. The formats for these sources are listed in The Columbia Southern University Citation Guide on pages 9 through 12:

APA Reference Page: Electronic Sources
Electronic sources have become the preferred and most common sources for today’s student—particularly since such a large number of contemporary students are engaged in online learning and do not have access to a traditional brick and mortar college research library. Generally, electronic sources require somewhat more information than their paper source equivalents, and students must be very sensitive to capitalization, spacing, and whether or not items should be italicized. The best advice might be to rely on a print or digital guide for building all of your sources—not just the electronic ones. The Citation Guide, once again, contains some very good examples on pages 9 through 12.
