Good Afternoon,

A Non Governmental Organization, is an organization that can be dedicated to numerous aspects of human rights, environmental concerns and even politics. These organizations can be non profit and can be operated on an local, national or even international level. Many of these organizations collaborate with governments to enhance and suggest policy change, while others closely monitor governmental actions, that might be decremental to the people.

I have chosen to speak about a non governmental organization called Cure Violence. This organization is based out of Chicago, Illinois, and operate on a global scale. The main objective of this organization, is to try to prevent violence in general. Their logic is based of the theory that violence is more of a disease and if you can prevent it at an early stage, you can eventually cure it (NGO advisor .n.d). The organization stops violence transmission at the source by interrupting conflict, identifying high-risk behaviors, and altering norms so that fewer people become infected by violence in the first place (NGO advisor .n.d.).

As far as being a friend, foe, or foil, i believe this organization is a friend to our government. Although they might question wether the government is doing enough in inner cities to prevent violence, i feel they would want to collaborate and make suggestions, on what actions the government can take, to prevent the spread of violence especially in crime ridden areas. From my personal experiences, as a police officer, i have seen the negative impact violence has in poverty ridden neighborhoods. Organizations such as Cure Violence, help mitigate disputes between gang members, speak to the youth, and collaborate with local police departments, to build police and community relations.

The organization has current projects all over the United States and abroad. Their recent success has spread to cities such as: Yonkers, NY; Brooklyn, NY; New Orleans, LA; and Philadelphia, PA. In a section of Brooklyn known as Bedford Stuyvesant,  this organization had Noticeable norm change after one year in significant reduction in acceptability of violence (cureviolence.org). I patrolled Bedford Stuyvesant as a police officer, and have seen the positive change these hard working individuals have made in that community.

The individual nongovernmental organization I will be discussing is International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. This group is the world’s largest humanitarian organization. They help people in about 150 countries. 100 million volunteers are involved as well as the Red Cross and Red Crescent societies. The well-known group has been around since 1919. The purpose of their mission is to help people who are affected by man-made disasters. The purpose includes helping people through health crisis by providing medical and community care programs. The countries were affected by their help in a great way and lots of help was received.

International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies would be considered as a friend. The network dedicates all their time into helping others in times of need. Tending to the needs of Hungarian refugees, the group received an award in 1957. The name of the reward is Nansen Refugee Award. The original name of the organization is League of Red Cross Societies. This organization is basically responsible for aiding national Red Cross and Red Crescent societies. The group is more for helping instead of conflict. Securing others from harmful disease is a strong asset about them. Medical attention is always a good idea in places of need. There are a lot of countries that does not have medical facilities or anything medical related. In these countries the medical attention was highly appreciated.

UNHCR-run camps are another benefit that comes along with all the other help. These camps provide food, water, health care (as mentioned earlier). and relief items. This organization had three different names. The names are is International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, the League of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, and International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies would defiantly be considered as a friend. The group was a friend to many different countries. These countries were in need of a "friend" for many reasons. If possible I believe the choice of helping with a peace keeping treaty would have been their choice.
