Executive Summary

For many years, Ford as recalled several of its cars due to transmission components that are due for upgrades or repairs. These problems affect drive-ability and caused a variety of transmission symptoms.

My project will assess issues involved in the Transmission problems of Ford cars. From an economic perspective, the company aims at improving its capability to adapt and effectively address the diverse challenges at each phase of production, meet the needs of its customers and the prospects of its stakeholders. The project will also compare it with other car manufacturing company.

My project will focus on the company aim at improving the environment through the use of an efficient manufacturing strategy, reducing the greenhouse emissions of its automobiles, designing automobiles that can last longer and use recycled materials during manufacturing.

For a company and its product to be successful and remain that strong, it should be able to foresee the future in terms of their business. It’s even more important for an established business like Ford as they already have various strong competitors present in the market. If they fail to predict the future trend, they will have to trail behind in the race.

Introduction

Ford Motor Company is an American automaker based in Dearborn, Michigan, a suburb of Detroit, the company was founded by Henry Ford, on June 16, 1903. Ford Motor Company became one of the largest and most profitable companies in the world and being one of the few to survive the Great Depression. The largest family-controlled company in the world, the Ford Motor Company has been in continuous family control for over 110 years.

In the process of building his first few models of medium-priced cars, and in the context of an automobile industry that had yet to prove where it was heading. Ford become convinced that there was a huge market in the U.S. for an inexpensive car that was light-weight but of high quality, and that was powerful but did not require great mechanical skill to operate.

The rationale for choosing the project as to do with environmental responsibility, especially with the transmission problems Ford cars are common with. Ford needs to compete against top players (e.g. Toyota) that aggressively innovate and market their products. Also, the automotive industry has high exit barriers, which means that firms would rather keep competing with Ford than to close their business, because of the high costs and investments. Such a condition exerts a strong force of competition against Ford.

In addition, Ford must compete against a moderate number of firms, especially a few large ones like General Motors. Based on this aspect of the Five Forces analysis, Ford must maximize its competitive advantage to address the external factors linked to competition.

Progress made so far

My analysis of Ford cars transmissions, is becoming more refined as I continue to review it weekly with other car manufacturing company. Through an analysis of customer surveys and findings, I believe my project will touch upon a more general assessment of the transmission problems faced by most Ford cars. The three areas I’m going to focus on are Manufacturing, Reducing Greenhouse emission and Designing car that can last longer. My hope is to see an improvement in this three areas.

Project plan

I am currently on schedule with my project and I plan on continuing to follow my calendar schedule without any change. Keeping to my calendar schedule, I should have a strong draft ready to submit every week.

Capstone project summary: August 22 – 28

Begin Data Analysis: August 29 – September 4

Draft Section: August 5 – August 11

Submit first draft: August 18

Submit second draft: August 25

Submit and present final work: Week 6 August 30

Conclusion

The project states that genuine problems existed with the implementations which Ford engineers quickly revised through partial redesign and reprogramming. It's also true that the negative perception resulting from U.S. consumers' lack of familiarity with and understanding of what they were buying rendered moot the difference. Even if only it were a matter of calibration, Ford shouldn’t have let any product reach the market that way. The fact is, this transmission has never worked properly from the get go, and redesigned parts and software updates are only a make up for their defects. With all my findings, Ford as started doing some recalls and finding a lasting solution to the transmission problems.
