Strategic Plan Part 3: Balanced Scorecard and Communication Plan

Air Products and Chemicals Inc.

Key Trends, Assumptions, and Risks in the Context of the Final Business Model

The renewable energy division seeks to be the next big venture for Air Products and Chemicals Inc. As with every business venture, it is necessary to have a strategic plan in place. This will help in aligning Air Products renewable energy division's activities to its vision and strategy. Besides, the strategic plan ensures that communications are improved both internally and externally. This is done through a scorecard which will also help Air Products to bench its performance against strategic goals. Therefore, it is important to consider the trends that characterize the renewable energy industry including concerns over the sustainability of the energy. This looks not only on the short term feasibility but the long term perspectives of the project. To attain this, several processes are carried which include simulating and accelerated life-time testing in order to develop the state-of-the-art technology. In this regard, it is important to note that these processes come at an additional cost of the production process.

Besides, another trend is that renewable energy investment overtook fossil fuel energy. This is an important trend which guarantees that the renewable energy sector is a worthwhile investment looking forward. Since the shift for the renewable energy is occurring in very short time spectrum, it makes the renewable energy division at Air Products dynamic. In addition, the trend foretells the potential that the industry has for growth. Besides, there is a trend where commercial and industrial customers have taken the lead in the renewable energy industry. This is seen both in terms of the investment in research and development of renewable energy technology and the customers for the renewable energy. Institutions and business premises are embracing the potential resourcefulness of the renewable energy sector.

Also, there are new sources of capital and financial products from private investors. The private sector is eyeing the renewable energy sector due to the greater returns projected. The insurance sector too is gaining confidence in the industry. There are more risk-transfer structures which have made it possible to minimize the level of risk by increasing the opportunity of getting lucrative returns from the investment. Another trend is that in the development of cross-technology, there is increased government funding. Governments of the world have become more sensitive to the global issues regarding traditional fossil fuel. In particular, global warming, sustainability, cost and global fuel crisis has seen a shift for the renewable energy.

Notably, distributed generation initiative has seen the renewable energy investment move away from the centralized power generation. Individual consumers hence can produce their energy. The decline in the cost of acquiring distributed energy generation equipment portends that a rapid advancement and eventual takeover by the renewable energy is imminent. Specially, assumptions made in the business model for Air Products’ renewable energy division include that the existing structures both the infrastructure and research capacity of the institution will sufficiently support the new venture. There are chances of failure of full compatibility. This would see the costs in the establishment of the division rise. It is further assumed that the policies and framework in the global adoption will be independently established for the renewable energy. It is not guaranteed that this will take place in a considerably realistic period.

Essentially, the risks associated with the venture include that technology easily runs obsolete. This would mean that there are recurrent costs in acquisition and upgrading to new technology. Another risk is the degree of social acceptance for the new technology. “There have been remote incidences of hostile reception of renewable technology by communities” (Rodriguez, 2012). For instance, the construction of windmills on land and offshore is seen as degrade on the aesthetic value of the natural scenery. Finally, there is the risk that the division’s strategy may fail at the implementation phase. However, robust planning is critical in mitigating these risks.

Strategic Objectives for the Renewable Energy Division in a Balanced Scorecard Format

Figure 1: Balanced Scorecard for Air Products’ renewable energy division

The renewable energy division must take into consideration the above key trends, assumptions, and risks which will affect its business operations. The consideration will enable Air Products’ new division to attain its vision and mission. Strategic objectives will help in narrowing down from the broader vision to more specific plans and projects that are attainable.

Customer Value Perspective

The first strategic objective for the renewable energy division at Air Products and Chemicals Inc. regards the production of safe and reliable energy. This especially leans on the customer value perspective by ensuring the superiority of the products offered. Besides, all the division's production activities must bio-friendly with minimal negative environmental impact. Product superiority will ensure customer retention as a result of satisfaction. Moreover, product superiority ensures that customers get value for their investment. Also, the products sustainability must remain attractive in the long run. This includes minimal chances of becoming obsolete and lower maintenance and upgrade costs.

Shareholder Value or Financial Perspective

The strategic objective in regard to the financial perspective first concerns the market share. “The accelerated global adoption of renewable technology has seen higher investment stakes in the sector” (Rodriguez, 2012). In order to increase the shareholders’ value at Air Products’ renewable energy division, there should be objectified tapping into the global market to gain at least 10% stake in the global market. Taking a particular interest in partnering with developing countries which are slightly lagging behind is one way of scooping a bigger market share. Increasing the shareholders’ value will also involve increasing the revenues through aggressive marketing strategies. The revenues are projected to grow by 50% in three years. Besides, the costs incurred in the production, both fixed and variable costs must be held at minimal. Profitability is especially envisioned to be achievable through retaining of customers. Being sensitive to the evolving global trends will also ensure that the division maintains a competitive edge.

Process or Internal Operations Perspective

Maintaining the competitiveness and sustainability of the renewable energy division venture will require keeping track of the performance of the entire process. Tracking performance requires the establishment of key performance indicators (KPI). According to Rodriguez (2012), these will address critical areas of performance including an increase in sales at 20% annual rate in the next two years followed by 35% increase in the third year. Besides, the average profit margin must be tracked to ensure that it increases at a rate of 25%. Another important metric to consider internally is the customer lifetime value (CLV) which is crucial in long-term engagements. The CLV is also important whenever to consider the value for money in meeting the customer’s needs. The improvement in productivity will be measured in terms of the efficiency and innovations.

Learning and Growth (Employee) Perspective

Employees are an important asset to the division and Air Products and Chemicals Inc. as an entity. Their satisfaction hence is important as it ensures their productivity and dedication. Their satisfaction will be attained through taking care of their welfare including insurance, pension and other benefits such as rewarding exemplary performance. Proper remuneration and keeping the communication channels for timely feedback is also another objective of the division. Embracing technological innovation will also ensure that the employee’s safety is enhanced while making their productive capacity more efficient. Besides, as a continuation of the Air Products culture employee retention and offering job security will be upheld.

Outline of Communication Plan

“The above objectives need to be communicated to all stakeholders. Communication of objectives is important as it help in understanding the plans hands and the role of each stakeholder” (Argenti, 2015). Further, it helps in elaborating the critical concerns so as to open dialogue and input to attain the division’s objectives. The main stakeholders that need to be communicated with include Air Products and Chemicals Inc.’s executive management, the employees and the investors in the new division. All the communication regarding the objectives will be done formally. This will be done in the form of internal memos and emails. These will ensure maximum reach in an efficient, timely and cost-effective manner.
