Air Products and Chemicals Inc.
Introduction
Air Products and Chemicals Inc. has prided itself over the years as the provider of a variety of products including semiconductor materials, the atmospheric gases, equipment and services, and specialty gases. The company strives to meet its values including an understanding for the customer’s needs, pursuit for integrity, honesty and passion (Air Products and Chemicals, Inc., 2015b). To meet the customer’s needs and the provision of sustainable solutions and offering excellent service to its customers Air Products and Chemicals Inc. needs to take an innovative approach. The company’s sustainability report outlines Air Products and Chemicals Inc. commitment in upholding customer operations in order to grow, conserve and care (Air Products and Chemicals, Inc., 2015a).
Importance of Innovation in Air Products and Chemicals Inc. Vision, Mission, and Values
Air Products and Chemicals Inc. has been active in the Carbon Capture and Sequestration (CCS) which aims at mitigation of greenhouse gas. However, the company has not taken active role in clean energy production. The capture of CO2 released during combustion of fossil fuel before it reaches the atmosphere is a key process (Air Products and Chemicals, Inc., 2015d). An active participation however would make Air Products and Chemicals Inc. efforts more pronounced. Besides, it’s in adherence to Air Products and Chemicals Inc. goals of safety, the new production would enhance the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). The new production division should take on active energy production by producing facilitating technologies in geothermal, wind and solar energy production.
Air Products new division mission statement will be; development of sustainable and cost-effective technology, and offering leadership in the transition towards a global adoption of green energy.
Business Model for the New Division
The new business division at Air Products and Chemicals Inc. needs to take the following business model:
The key partners to Air Products and Chemicals Inc. in the renewable energy production industry include governments, private sector investors and environment conscious organization including UNEP which form the bulk of the target customer base. Besides, Air Products and Chemicals Inc. need to develop partnership with other key companies that have been advanced research in different areas of renewable energy. For instance, jet manufacturing companies such as GE, Rolls Royce and Pratt Whitney have immense wealth on air turbine research (Turchi, Ma, & Erbes, 2011). Such partnership may be crucial for the development in wind energy.
The new division’s key activities will include research in the most effective renewable energy production strategies. Besides, the division will partner with clients to meet their specific aspirations in the production of renewable energy.
The values for the new division include safety and integrity in the ethical and sustainable development of innovative renewable energy ideas. In doing so, the division will aim at creating long-term relationships that help to meet the global targets in emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2).
The customer relationship in the new division will guided by one of the firms core values of excellence in service delivery. Besides, the customer relations will strive to attain efficiency both in the services and the products.
The key resources include skilled and experienced manpower, infrastructural investment in plant and machinery and research in the renewable energy sector. The intellectual asset forms the very crucial resource that will ensure competitiveness.
Since most of the energy projects are capital intensive, they will involve a limited number of intermediaries. In most cases, the business will be done directly between the client and the firm. The direct contact will be crucial in understanding the needs of the customers.
Air Products and Chemicals Inc. new division will have two major customer segments: governments and government agencies, and the private sector development partners. The global governments have had particular interest and concern on global warming hence will appreciate efforts to develop renewable energy technology. The most important costs in the new division include the cost of establishing a plant and machinery for the new department, the cost of research in the field and marketing of the product. The establishment of the plant is envisioned to be the most expensive part of the venture. Activities towards researching the feasible renewable energy technologies will also be costly.
The revenue streams include selling machinery and equipment for renewable energy production. Besides, there will be revenue from sale of energy where the company is bound to benefit from partnerships with different companies. In addition, the firm will be getting consultation from different clients and development partners due to its expertise in the interrelated fields.
How the Division Addresses Customer Needs and Achieves Competitive Advantage
The new division presents a unique opportunity in creating a new niche that addresses the customer needs. Global warming has been an issue of concern in the recent years. Most of the global warming has been attributed to the rise in the emission of greenhouse gases in the recent years (Pehnt, 2006). The alarm on the global warming catastrophe has seen the world community acclaim for better energy provision. In particular, there has been call for the adoption of renewable energy.
Since Air Products has a reputation of offering reliable products in different fields including energy, it would hence be a reliable partner for companies seeking to venture in renewable energy. Besides, its experience in gas for instance gives the company a head-start in geothermal production.
Vision for the Renewable Energy Division
Air Products and Chemicals Inc. renewable energy division envisions becoming a global leader in the production of safe and reliable energy. The division plans to endeavor in robust research to meet the current and future needs of the industry. In particular, the division takes pride in meeting and surpassing the customer’s expectations. This is in line with the ever evolving global needs that ensure competitiveness and sustainability. Air Products and Chemicals Inc. plans to become a reliable partner to enhancement of research and development in renewable energy sector through collaboration with other stakeholders in the sector.
How the Vision, Mission, and Value of the Renewable Energy Division Align With the Company's Mission and Vision
The new division’s values, mission and vision are in alignment with the current values, mission and vision of Air Products and Chemicals Inc. For instance, the division is geared towards the sustainability in the production of the renewable energy. Air Products on the other hand is geared towards growth, conservation and care. The new division hence is in support of these ideals.
Besides, the division believes in partnering with key development partners for the betterment of the technology. Partnerships have been central in Air Products operations. In fact, part Air Products current mission includes the recognition of partners possessing technologies beneficial to Air Products’ business aspect. Renewable energy is considered a safe energy option. This is in line with other existing goals such as reduction of CO2 emissions in the atmosphere. The division hence is an expansion of the energy industry venture that the company is has already ventured and has high stake.
