ENC 1102 Final Research Paper Quick Guide

Formatting

· Refer to the sample research paper provided in the course module for formatting guidelines, papers that are not formatted correctly will not receive a grade higher than a C

· Name, Teacher, Class and Date will go in the upper-left hand corner of your paper

· Your name and page number will appear in the upper-right hand corner

· Skip two spaces and center your title, please make sure that your title is capitalized correctly

· Use the default settings for Microsoft Word, one inch margins, etc.

· Use 11 or 12 point, Times New Roman or Calibri

Grammar/Punctuation/style

· Watch out for typos

· Be sure that you are capitalizing correctly, only proper nouns should be capitalized for instance “high school” is not capitalized but “Westport High School” is

· Be direct and clear in your writing, watch your run-ons and fragments

· Numbers less than ten are to be written out, if your sentence begins or ends with a number it should be written out as well

· Use quotes carefully, no hit and runs, ensure that a majority of your paragraph is your own writing and not entirely made up of quotes, also remember that if you quote you need to discuss that quote

· In-text citation should consist of the last name of the author and page number in parentheses BEFORE and punctuation

· Paper must have a correctly cited and alphabetized works cited page at the end of the essay

Rubric

139-150:

· Introduction follows a clear line of logic leading to a strong thesis statement

· Body paragraphs follow a clear line of logic with a clear topic sentence, all body paragraphs relate back to the thesis statement

· All in-text citations are correct

· MLA bibliography is alphabetized and all parts of the citation are correct

· Very few to no typos

120-138

· Introduction mostly follows a clear line of logic leading to a good thesis statement

· Body paragraphs mostly follow a clear line of logic with a clear topic sentence, all body paragraphs mostly relate back to the thesis statement

· Most in-text citations are correct

· MLA bibliography is alphabetized and most parts of the citation are correct

· Some typos are present but are not too distracting

· Very few to no typos

107-119

· Introduction struggles to follow a clear line of logic leading to a weak thesis statement

· Body paragraphs struggle to follow a clear line of logic and topic sentences are not clear, body paragraphs do not clearly relate back to the thesis statement

· Most in-text citations are incorrect

· MLA bibliography is not alphabetized and most parts of the citation are incorrect

· Many typos are present resulting in unclear writing

92-106

· Introduction does not follow a clear line of logic leading resulting in a weak thesis statement

· Body paragraphs do not follow a clear line of logic and topic sentences are not clear, body paragraphs do not clearly relate back to the thesis statement

· Most in-text citations are incorrect

· MLA bibliography is not alphabetized and most parts of the citation are incorrect, or is missing

· Many typos are present resulting in unclear writing
