Directions
After receiving peer review feedback on the research paper, consider stepping away from the project for a day or two. When reviewing the paper again, students will be more capable of seeing areas that need improvement. The self-assessment checklist is a concise tool that students can use to determine whether or not the paper needs additional work.
Introduction
Introduction contains a clear, well-developed thesis statement
Introduction makes the point of the paper clear to the reader (that is, the reader will understand the paper’s purpose)
Body Paragraphs
Paper follows the outline and does not overlook any important points or details
Each paragraph has a topic sentence presenting one main idea
Supporting details are provided for each main idea
Unnecessary quotations are not included
Paragraphs use transitional words and phrases
Conclusion
Conclusion is convincing and provides a sense of completion
Conclusion does not present new information
Mechanics
Contractions are not used
First person point of view is not used (e.g., “I think,” “In my opinion,” etc.)
Second person point of view is not used (e.g., “You should,” “You might think,” etc.)
Sentences vary in length
All grammar, punctuation, and spelling has been checked
MLA Style
Paper is in proper MLA format (e.g., margins, font size, and style, etc.)
Sources are documented correctly and appropriately
At least eight different sources are cited in the paper
Citations are in proper MLA format
Works cited page is included, with all sources in proper MLA format
All sources cited in the paper are in the works cited, and vice versa
Various types of sources are used
Other Items
Paper is eight to ten pages in length (excluding cover page and works cited page)
Paper was read aloud
