Potential Population Effected:

Dentists, patients, dental supply houses and competing laboratories within the rural and metropolitan areas of Atlanta Ga.

Area of Focus:

Expansion of business and training of new workers through the use of technology and best practices.

Explanation of Problem:

The problems I face begin with financing of expansion, and creating training material that can be effective for all learning styles to accommodate employees and can be accessible before and during actual real-time work activities.

Define Variables:

         Monetary amount for success of expansion

         Number of employees and learning styles

         Learning period of each employee

         Effectiveness of learning material and method

Research Questions:

What are the major factors that will determine a successful level of learning that increases business productivity to a self-sustaining level?

How can technology be successfully implemented to create a reasonable time frame for successful learning transfer.

Trends in Educational Action Research

HOW the use of technology to emphasize best practices will aid in the expansion of a business and training new employees

Plan – Area of Focus

The purpose of my study I believe is to find the best means of funding the expansion of a VA owned and operated small business with that being said this also means to me keeping cost as minimal as possible. Which leads to one question how can I train people some with little to no experience. Learn to perform task in a dental lab yet allow the business to maintain a profitable level of productivity.

Plan – Explanation of Problem:

As the owner of this one man dental laboratory I created I have managed to sustain the lives of my sons and I for the past 8 years making customized dentures . I learned these skills in the Air Force and believed I could perform these tasks to go into business ,since that time I have grown in clientele to the point that the next phase in the evolution of business has come about that is expansion. Which means teaching others to be able to reproduce my techniques on a larger scale for which there is no learning material readily available to implement a just in time training format.

Plan – Population

The population this will affect are men and women of working age preferably with some dental laboratory experience such as unemployed or first year graduate technicians, or if necessary people willing to learn the trade with basic knowledge of todays’ technology. There will only be initially three employees needed to start along with myself and the addition of more as the business grows.

Plan – Research Questions

1.What are the sources available for financing veteran owned businesses?

2.What learning format can best present the learning material utilizing technology? Such as PowerPoint or video.

3.What system of delivery should be used that learners can access utilizing just in time methods of learning? Such as mobile devices

Annotation: This book was created with today's entrepreneur in mind. It has a lot of straightforward advice and information on online business and marketing as well as new Internet resources. Material on legal and financial issues, international business, customer service, and state and federal tax regulations. As well as guidance on every vital aspect of small business success, such as preparing a business plan, finding the right location, deciding on an ownership structure, record keeping and taxes, financing and capital, inventory and distribution, hiring and staffing, managing and motivating people just to name a few.

After a short evaluation of these sources the two that best suit my needs are both from the Ashford library How to Start, Run, and Stay in Business : The Nuts-and-Bolts Guide to Turning Your Business Dream Into a Reality, and Technology Best Practices. Hoboken. The reason for these two choices is primarily due to the research of those whom at one point stood in my same shoes and have had the issues I’m now experiencing. In each of these resources there are blueprints of the do’s and don’ts to expanding and starting up a business that can be very insightful and allow me to navigate some of the pitfalls many encounter.

Through this process of selecting articles I discovered that I needed to be even more specific when it comes to searching for relevant material during a research process. I also learned that during this process that the search itself can help to narrow or eliminate materials as the search goes on. Finally I learned that when searching for material the wording of you submit to the search window is the key to locating material pertinent to your search.

From this point forward in regards to my search and evaluation process I will identify more clearly the exact content of my search. This will allow me to enter search queries more relevant to my search and deliver the information that is effective and pertinent to whatever I am researching. I also see that in most cases I have cost myself a lot of valuable time reading material that was not relevant to my primary objective which can be cut in half if the search queries had been more specified and in my current situation that is vital.

From the information I gathered I believe I can more precisely identify the best candidates for future employment with my business. I can also use some of the information to create learning material more pertinent to my field and understand the before and after effects of some business decisions. Lastly I can foresee possible pitfalls before they occurs as well as develop a course of action to evade or eliminate some pitfalls all together.

Draft Action Research Plan

The purpose of this study is to identify the best practice for training new employees utilizing technology to expand a business ”

This action research project was due to running a one-man dental laboratory for the past eight years. As each year passed I could see an increase in my work load year after year as this continued I began to ask myself where do I go from here? what is my next step? I then wondered about growth how do I go about it ? I ask myself what do I need to do to get others to help me produce dentures in the same way as myself? How can I teach them? I reflected on my instructor from the community college who asked me what do I think about teaching? I realized I had and still was gaining the necessary tools I need to answer those questions by continuing my education. By this means I could research learn the best practices necessary to accomplish my goal and in fastest and most effective way as I investigate and explore experiences of others in related situations.

This all began 10 years ago during which time I drove propane trucks and also raised my son which I did alone from the time he was one week old. Becoming a single father of a one week old changed my outlook on life, I wanted better for him but I was stuck driving trucks with no ideas for bettering my life. After enduring two hurricanes a week apart I decided Florida was not a good place to raise my son so I transferred my job to Georgia. Nine months later I was involved in an accident which eventually led to me losing my job and what most would see as a bad thing I looked at as my last opportunity to go back to school, as well as find a way to support me and my son which could let me be there for him at any time so school it was..

I went back to school with the idea of starting my own dental lab so I refreshed my former knowledge from the Air Force by taking the dental laboratory course offered at my local community college. The two years later the day after my graduation I began scottcreations, for the first few years’ business was pretty lean. As more people learned of my business work increased and I began to see myself feeling exhausted with going to school online and running my laboratory. I now find myself at a point where I can either die or grow so the question for me became how do I grow? How can I incorporate others in my business and keep my product uniform for all my customers? This has led to my area of focus which is what are the best practices for teaching with technology when expanding a business?

When I initially began to investigate this issue I contacted the local community college I had previously attended, and opened my doors for interns. I thought I could take Dental laboratory students who were nearing their graduation and train them in my techniques I had perfected over time. I found that many were still too far behind the curve, but thought they knew more than they did and had problems with my techniques because they were veered from their books. I then tried people with no previous introduction to the fieldbecause they had no preconceived ideas of the field or methods or terminology in each case I attempted a one on one method of instruction with no technology.

I then decided to create a PowerPoint presentation addressing what I considered to be the most crucial and time consuming aspect of my business, which was the denture processing phase. This is where the denture is placed in a flask (a device used to create a mold) after which a mold is created then the wax from which the denture was constructed is replaced by acrylic. This is one of the most important aspects of making denture yet requires very little technical training which is why I consider it a great point of entry for a new employee with little to no knowledge of this field.

After which I search for technology to suit this purpose as I realized it was how learners of today learned after a few days of searching I discovered no relevant material existed for training in this field.

This left me with a laundry list of questions 1.) Why was there no learning material utilizing technology to address this issue? 2.) Where do I begin in creating suitable material for training? 3.) How can I implement learning material into a work environment, and maintain a level of productivity that can sustain a business?

Just based on the questions derived from this issue it was clear this was an issue of teaching and learning. Similar to an article I read in which the issue was and I quote” Corporate sector and government employees encounter barriers to their adoption of web-mediated training. One such barrier is a lack of enthusiasm, possibly due to ineffective instructional design, which in turn affects motivation towards online learning” in this case it was a mere problem of engaging learners with online teaching (McKay, E., & Vilela, C. 2011). For me its lack of supportive material, proper method of implementation and being productive while doing so.

The that I have nearly 33 years of experience in this field and receiving my degree in education puts this well within my locus of control. Which means I am best suited to create the needed learning material in the field of dental laboratory technology and hopefully begin a trend that returns learners to this field. Which would coincide with the projected market growth.

Forecast / Industry Outlook (2016 Market Research Report on Dental Laboratories Industry).

When it comes to this field most have no idea where my passion originated here’s a little insight. As a young man I decided to enlist in the Air Force with the ambition of working with computers, but after a series of tests the air force determined I was a best suited to be a Dental laboratory technician. As I was introduced in tech school I saw only one other African American in my class of 36 students which should have been an indicator of what I was in store for. After tech school I arrived at my permanent duty station where I received a not so warm welcome as I discovered that many of the dental assistance were lab technician whom washout of school and were put into not so demanding programs such as dental assistance and all of whom were Caucasian. I would walk in on conversations where the last word spoken was the N word and subjected to degrading remarks from my superiors and eventually to my forced medical discharge. This could have broken me, but instead lit a fire under me which now has me in a position where I can be the first to create learning material utilizing technology which will be specific to my field now how cool is that?

What I mean is after enduring so much ridicule imagine how inspiring it will be to create material that would cement my name not in education , but in the field of dental laboratory technology where every attempt was made to discourage me from the field just because of my color.
