Should We Be Afraid Of Artificial Intelligence?
Artificial intelligence (AI) is a science of making computers perform duties like reasoning, learning and problem solving that humans use their intelligence to perform. The technology is based on various disciplines which include Computer science, Biological sciences, psychology engineering, linguistics and mathematics (Müller, et al. 560). Hypothetically, AI is dramatically progressing and this pose a threat to the rapid development in the field of AI, it could lead to a catastrophe in future like the extinction of human beings. This can happen if AI surpasses humans in general intelligence and becomes super intelligent, it may become so hectic and difficult to control the machines that are super intelligent. Most experts in the field of AI believe speculation about the harmful effects of Artificial Intelligence if the machines get super-intelligent in the near future. According to Stephen Hawking artificial intelligence could spell the end of human race.
Artificial intelligence is the biggest existential threat and we should be very careful and there ought to be a regulatory oversight both at a national and international level to ensure that no mistake is done as far as AI is concerned. Clive Sinclair who is an Inventor from Britain thinks that Ai will doom humanity once machines that are rivalling and surpassing human intelligence will make it very difficult for mankind to survive. Initially, the machines will work for us do all the work us but will become harmful when it becomes super-intelligent.
The adoption of AI in machines like computers will make the computers do almost every job and there will be a few jobs left for the entertainers. Writers, and other jobs that need creativity. There will be consequences AI and Robotics for employment and it will cause unemployment to the youths and many people will lose jobs as machines will perform most of the tasks. Computers will eventually be able to program themselves, absorb voluminous information and reason better than humans can and will be able to do it without stopping at anything. According to Kurzweil, there may be rapturous singularity where we shall end up merging with machines. Powerful AI may compete for resources hence battling with humans for resources and self-preservation (Adams, Samuel, 48).
The technological progress will lead to humans and machine intelligence will be merged making humans transhuman. And because there are no enough safeguards in place. Technology makes the future look murky and people fail to see the dangers. In our society today with the changing technology, complex systems are being relied on and these systems can fail at any time for example oil wells that are placed deep in the water may blow out and take a long period of time for resealing to take place or melting down of nuclear reactors and the explosion of rockets. These failures of an intelligent machine may be catastrophic and may lead to deaths of the humanity of long lasting effects on humans. The machines will keep getting smarter and more powerful but they will never develop human values. This means that the future would be a low-value future
The machines can be dangerous because they are being given too much power to act in response to sensory input. Goals of machines could change and they become smarter. The moment the machine start reprogramming themselves and improve themselves automatically leading to technological singularity or intelligence explosion and machines may start outwitting humans battling with humans for the resources and self-preservation (Müller, 571)
However, according to Eric Horvitz, there will be no danger as the developers of the machines and systems will be proactive and ensure that they are careful on how they field AI systems and at last get incredible benefits from the intelligence of the machines in almost all aspects of life ranging from science to medicine to education to economics to our daily life. The introduction of self-driving cars, Siri is able to get the voice and help perform a few tasks like locate a shopping mall, in the field of medicine students can be trained using AI and it also helps in Diagnosis. Advances in AI will be a major key in ushering in a new era of abundance where there will be plenty of food, water, and gadgets for all humans to use (Agar, Nicholas, 56)
The creation of super-intelligent computers is a great idea if there are vigilance and safeguards to ensure that machines do not surpass human control and do not pose a threat to human beings. The machines are not on the verge of taking over, is simply speculation and a whiff of hysteria. Machine intelligence has become a normal thing in life. Nowadays, computers fly planes and drive cars, new stories are created by computers without human intervention and the machines can do facial recognition. AI according to some scientist and academicians is not an imminent threat, it is the technology that unlocks a large space of possibilities, capabilities which enable space colonization that is not limited which can even upload the human brain into computers which will enable machines to be able to do anything that humans do (Vaidhyanathan, Siva, 78).
In conclusion, machines could become so intelligent and powerful to threaten humanity as a whole despite being irreconcilable with technological developments like simple robots and virtual assistants the future dangers may harm the field of AI. The safety should be made more concrete and productive and the engineering systems related to AI must operate safely with high reliability. The systems should be prevented from achieving their objects and goals by cheating and they should be able to explore new environment safely. The researchers who are involved in developing AI systems should ensure that the intelligence software that they develop is free of unintended consequences.
