Ethical Relativism Erik E. Pizarro Ethical relativism is, in essence, norms or rules that a certain culture or society finds to be morally right or wrong. An action may be right in one society but be totally not acceptable in another. Utilitarianism are actions that are right if they benefit the majority of the people. Kant’s categorical imperative is a philosophical concept that can be a way of evaluating motions for action. While living out of the country and visiting many other countries, I have realized that before I travel to any particular country I must first understand what that cultures customs and courtesies or what is ethically reltive . I was recently in Casablanca, Mor occo and the locals always said ' salaam ' which is short for 'As-Salaam-Alaikum' which means 'peace be unto you'. ('As-Salaam-Alaikum' 2016'). Normally in America, we always give the proper greeting of the day, i .e good morning , or we just say hello. Moroccans are Muslims so they use religious terms to greet one another. Normally Muslims wash their feet prior to praying. The other day I was walking into the bathroom and I saw one of our local employed staff washing his feet in our sinks. Now most of you may see this action as gross and totally n ot acceptable (I know I do). Although I am operating in his country, he was also inside the American Consulate where washing your feet in the sink is not acceptable. Not only countries have different norms or rules, but even certain organizations or communities have a set of norms or rules that are acceptable and some that are not. A couple years ago, when I was in my military occupational school in Florida, we had a Marine who was Jewish . Normally in the Marine Corps we take our covers (hats) off when indoors. However, because of this Marines religion, he was allowed to wear his seasonal camouflage yamaka. Now in the Marine Corps (I know this happens in the other branches too) there are many southerners that didn’t agree with that. Since America is a country formed of immigrants and we as service members fight for free dom , our Commanding officer allowed this. Even in small units, like the one I am currently in, we all have a different ideas of what is right and wrong due to where we grew up. We establish honor, courage and commitment as our foundational values that every Marine must live by (Headquarters Marine Corps, 2016). References: Ethical Relativism. (n.d.).
