paintings in the canon of modern painting in general. The author hypothesizes that the dearth of “famous”
Modernist American paintings is a direct result of the art market and the demand for European Modernist
works over American works. The article places this phenomenon within the social, intellectual, and
cultural context of twentieth century Europe and the United States.
