Here is the lecture.

For the past three weeks, you have been working with your consulting team in the online and virtual environment. The virtual workplace and the telecommuter workers are becoming more and more prevalent. The same is true with consumers who are using the Internet for shopping. Quite likely each one of you has operated in at least one of these roles. Hence, you probably understand some of the challenges inherent to the online and remote environments.

A major element and concern of telecommuting employees is not being able to see each other. This means that you are not seeing the body language and we learn so much by watching people. Even the verbal cues are not the same. Even though you may be talking during conference calls or directly, it is not uncommon for any participant to press the mute button to express a feeling or thought without being heard. New skills are required for the virtual workplace. As you are working with your consulting team members, you’ll experience some or all of these challenges. You are presented with the variables consultants face in the business world: technology issues, timing, personal and professional commitments, deadlines, team deliverables (quality, quantity, relevance),

If you have worked in the global virtual workplace, you find that there will be times that are not normal business hours. For example, if you live in Alaska, there is very little overlap between your normal business hours and those for folks on the East Coast of the United States. Going further with this, if you are working in a country in the Pacific Rim, it requires some accommodation of your schedules and the schedules of your co-workers on the East Coast. Usually, a give-and-take approach works; sometimes you will be working your regular hours and your co-workers are staying late; other times, you will be up early while your co-workers are working their regular hours, and vice versa. As professionals, we do what needs to be done. There are, of course, other considerations for how to work together in the virtual workplace, many of which you have experienced, and more that you can identify by performing research on the Internet and by working with your team in the iConnect environment.

Much of what you are experiencing can also translate to the remote and online consumer. CanGo’s customers do not go to CanGo to investigate and procure CanGo’s products. They could use the online capabilities and they could make telephones calls to CanGo. Those who call directly to CanGo provide direct input to the Customer Service Representatives. These representatives can hear emotions in the voices and words of the callers. It is another matter for the customers who purchase directly using CanGo’s Web site, and even more important, identifying those who are not purchasing CanGo’s products.

Fortunately, technology exists and more inroads are being made to enhance technology to identify consumer visits to company Web sites. However, unless the company provides the opportunity for the customer to complete a survey AND the customer is willing to provide feedback, it is unlikely that CanGo can learn how better to provide products that customers will purchase. Many of these customers have chosen to use online capabilities because they want to do it quickly and with little added time spent on the Web site. Thus, in reality, a company can forget about receiving feedback directly from them.

This has prompted the need for companies that can provide reliable market research data and analysis. A number of services are available that will look at buyer desires and trends. They also provide valuable information to companies to use for product development as well as marketing programs. You will learn more about these as you look at the video episodes for this week. You quite likely will identify others by your research on the Internet. Part of your consulting assignment with CanGo is to help CanGo learn more about its customers as well as customers CanGo wishes to attract. Be sure to consider your recommendations for learning about and dealing with their customers. Include this for consideration with CanGo’s marketing processes and programs.
