The Benefits of Self-Employment versus Em ployed

In the current world, businesses have opened a myriad of opportunities. An individual can do what he/she wants. Typically, opportunities vary from one individual to another. Some people prefer working for companies whereas others want to be self-employed. Therefore, there have been raging debates on self-employment versus employment with regards to which is better . Ideally, there are numerous advantages for individuals who are self-employed and have their own busine ss.

First, working for oneself one enjoys flexible working hours unlike when employed by an organization where one does not have freedom in taking vacation time or sick time without following certain procedures. A self-employed individual does not accord to a boss's schedule. He/she is free to decide what time he/she can get up and go to work. Furthermore, he/she can find the best time for working and does not require a relationship between one's boss and oneself because the individual is boss to himself/herself. This means that because a person is his/her own boss, he/she has flexibility in relation to when he/she can work. The person is not in fear of being fired. He/she has the job security . Thus, he/she has the opportunity to build oneself economically and provide a sense of stability for his/her family as well as belonging to a community (Nakhaie, 2015; Rietveld, Kippersluis and Thurik, 2015). It is imperative noting that a self-employed person can receive immense financial rewards. Hence, the person will be rewarded by his/her business for his/her sacrifices. Also, the person can make a colossal amount of money since he/she works at his/her favorable time that brings in more money. This means that an individual will definitely have a chance to build dependable and real retirement value saving the family any agony at retirement age.

Secondly, self-employment grants one control, independence and freedom from routine . An employed individual operates within certain limits and is not free to break the company's norms , however, a self-employed person works for his/her clients and not employers. Hence he/she controls the events since customers can state what they expect from one's business but they cannot direct one's performance and work. This depends solely on an individual owning the business. Of course, the person would want to satisfy his/her clients if she/she wants to receive more work, good ratings and favorable referrals however, the same individual is his/her own boss and decides when, how and where to tighten to get the work done. Therefore, since the business is often in a field of one's specialty or area that one enjoys, he/she can put the best ideas into the business. The business can be adaptable to demands or needs one sees that they need to be done. This flexibility ensures that an individual's business can change almost overnight to attained a perceived need (Nakhaie, 2015 ). This implies also that the self-employed person is able to effectively and efficiently manage his/her business. He/she enjoys the opportunity to decide what things are to be performed, who to accomplish them and at what time are to be done. The person is not tied or required to work within a specific time to control, organize and manage his/her activities as there is no supervision. In relation to the fact that a person has control of the business activities, the person can drive the business to become very profitable and hence be able to secure better contractual opportunities. For instance, often companies often are willing to pay more to independent contractors due to the reason that such contractors do not have expensive and long-term commitment which they do with permanent workers, such as unemployment compensation, benefits and pensions (Nakhaie, 2015; Dunne, and Murphy , 2015).

Thirdly, self-employment offers one an open-ended career progression . This is due to the reason that an individual will develop a breadth of talents. An employed person has limited opportunities for building his/her career as well as getting promoted within an organization, because there are usually fewer chances and lucrative positions available to many other competing employees. However, an individual working for oneself can receive high profits and returns depending on his/her willpower and proficiency according to the sentiments by Rietveld, Kippersluis and Thurik (2015). It is imperative to understand that an individual on self-employment, in the course of his/her running his/her own business, the person will definitely learn and acquire immense skills of accounting, marketing, selling and negotiating that are fundamental and often sought after in the workforce. According to Dunne, and Murphy (2015), self-employment enables one to gain fundamental skills that add to the financial security of a person. This is due to the reason that a person gains skills that others will spend money on, be it providing a service to the people or creating a product that people will buy, people will pay and the person will make money on his/her own. Therefore, as implied by Nakhaie (2015), the person will not be worried of layoff, the bad boss or corporate downsizing because he/she has gained skills and ability to survive and thrive on his/her own, regardless of the prevailing situations.

Nonetheless, self-employment has its own demerits. Self-employment requires that an individual undertakes personal responsibility for his/her profession development and training unlike when employed in a company. When employed in a company, training and development of employee's skills are usually funded by the specific company. In self-employment, the person will need to exercise uttermost self-discipline to maintain his/her skills and credibility. An individual requires to ensure training and development needs are resolved appropriately since it may require taking time out from client work. Personal training and development require money and hence the person has to meet the financial demands to ensure his/her her skills remain current and appropriate towards the work (Rietveld, Kippersluis and Thurik, 2015).

Another disadvantage of being self-employed is the professional liability. In self-employment, everything rests on the person. Thus, the self-employed person is directly responsible for the work delivered and the advice given to the clients. This implies that a person can face a personal legal liability if the person miscalculates moves, makes mistakes or when the client is dissatisfied with the service (Rietveld, Kippersluis and Thurik, 2015 ).

In spite of the fact that there are some disadvantages to working for oneself. For example, taking personal liability in case of poor service and personal funding of own training and development, self-employment offers immense advantages. Self-employment offers an individual flexible working hours, breadth of talent development and freedom and control of decisions as the person is liberated from office politics, rules, meetings and the associated costs. It is worthwhile working for oneself to archive the best in life. In fact, going solo as seen from the advantages above brings benefits. An individual is his/her own boss, although the clients or customers the bosses however, an individual has greater freedom to determine what to pursue to add value to the business. More importantly, working for oneself is being in control of one's destiny. The money that the person makes or saves impacts on an individual's bottom line as opposed to working for a company. The person is not in fact waiting for promotion or standing in line hoping that he/she is included in the bonus pool this financial year. Indeed, self-employment has some risks but the rewards are amazing .

Hello Scott,

Thank you for your rough draft. The title page is correctly formatted, and yu do have a References page. In terms of content, there is a thesis, and it has three main points. The points also make sense in terms of the two subjects that make up the topic. The discussion is also on the right track.

Having said all of the above, I have to also say that the paper should be so much more on point, including as follows:

--Title:Use the same title for the title page and the first page of the text. See the APA Sample paper.

--Introduction: you want to focus/streamline it. See Wordsmith Chapter 3 about how to write introductions. Also, look at the introduction of The Advantages of Internet Shopping (Wordsmith, p. 38) and of the essay Working—Then and Now (Wordsmith, p. 214).

--Thesis: You want to word the thesis precisely, and make the three main points clear. The main points should not overlap. You might look at freedom to decide how to run the company, freedom to work when ever and not fear a boss, and the freedom/ability to become wealthy.

See Wordsmith Chapter 3 about how to write the thesis. Also, look at the thesis of The Advantages of Internet Shopping (Wordsmith, p. 38) and of the essay Working—Then and Now (Wordsmith, p. 214).

--Body: You want to plan out each section of the body, meaning the section for each main point. You might look at freedom to decide how to run the company (whom to hire, what projects to prusue), freedom to work whenever and not fear a boss, and the freedom/ability to become wealthy. If you choose those three main points, then plan each one out before you rewrite them. If you need to use two paragraphs for a section, y9ou can do that too.

--Conclusion: See Chapter 3 of Wordsmith for ideas on how streamline conclusions. Do not be repetitive. We can restate the thesis, but vary the wording; to show our skills at language.

--When citing sources, make sure to cue the reader as to when the parahprase is coming up. Readers want to know which words and ideas are yours and which are from the source.

--Make the wording concise. You can go to the Purdue University OWL (Online Writing Lab). In the box that says Search the OWL, type in ”concise writing” (or any grammar topic as necessary), and you will see information on that topic as well as some practice examples. Here is the link: owl.english.purdue.edu/owl

--Use headings. They should help you focus each section of the body of the paper. They also help your readers to see the focal points at a glance.

Remember that in Chapter 1, Arlov says about revising, “Don’t be afraid of making big changes during revision” (p. 5). She also says, “Don’t be afraid to start over. The first words you write are not written in stone”(p. 5).

Remember to also look at samples of essays.

Again, the assignment is on the right track. I look forward to your final draft.

Give your paper a title that reflects the contents of the paper.

[Faulty parallelism. Use parallel constructions for verb tenses, noun phrases, document headings, and elements in a series or list. (Refer to Parallelism from the Grammar and Writing Guides in the Tutorials & Guides section of the Center for Writing Excellence for more information.)]

[Your paper will benefit from a stronger introduction. The introduction provides an opportunity to capture the reader's attention with a “hook.” It also indicates what the paper will be about and how you will approach the topic. Refer to the 5-paragraph tutorial from Writing Wizards in the Tutorials & Guides section of the Center for Writing Excellence for more information about writing introductions.]

Do not be r4edundant. This means “self employed”

Use the second pronoun You.” It is more effective. Use it throughout the essay.

This is a good point, and perhps should be the main point for the paragraph

This should be a separate paragraph. One of the pluses of self employment is there is no celing to the amount of money you can make. In other words, y ou have the opportunity to become wealthy/a job elsewhere has a salary ceiling

[Beware of comma splices. Please see the Comma Splice link in the Grammar Mechanics section of the Grammar and Writing Guides in the Center for Writing Excellence for more information.]

Is this the only information from the source? We want to make clear where the paraphrase starts.

Awkward: say “you”

Point of the paragraph is not clear. There should be one main point to each body paragraph

Okay

Your thesis is about the advantages, so only mention a disadvantage related to an advantage, but then you highlight the advantge.

Too long and repetivie and vague in some places. Pare it down to three sentences.
