Positive Emotion, Courage, Wisdom, And Knowledge

Journal Activity 1.1 PERMA Assessment

This assessment is important as it helped to measure positive emotion, my engagement, relationships, meaning, and my accomplishments. In fact, according to "Authentic Happiness" (2016), PERMA is an acronym for those listed domains. The positive emotions domain reflected that I scored an eight which is rated as high. The engagement field shows that I scored an eight as well. I scored a 7 in the relationship area. In Meaning, Accomplishment and health areas I score 9’s. My lowest scores were negative affect and loneliness; lonely was a 5 and negative affect was a 6. The average of all these scores tells me that overall I am a happy person as well as healthy but sometimes I feel lonely.

This activity was not uncomfortable or challenge the question were straightforward and easy to answer I did not have to take much time to think or answer any of the questions. I was surprised to have lower scores in the negative affect or lonely domain as I do not think of myself as negative, and I have many supports. As for incorporating this activity into both my personal and professional life, making more time for family, and friends can help me resolve and increase feelings of loneliness and possibly reduce negative affects.

Journal activity 2.1 VIA Survey of Character Strengths

This questionnaire measures 24 of your personal characteristics by you asking a series of 120 questions. I did find the question challenging, and they took longer to think about. My top three strengths were Fairness, leadership, and honesty; fairness was number 1. My bottom three characteristics were zest, appreciation of beauty and excellence and the love of learning; love of learning being at the bottom. I feel this assessment measured me fairly accurately. I believe my leadership role as a supervisor at work is very important to me, and I work very hard to treat others fairly. I also very firmly believe in honestly. I have to say the love of learning is probably at the bottom because honestly, I feel like I have been to school for a million years (exaggeration of course). I was surprised that zest was lower, as I do not think I do things half-heartedly or not completely through but I do agree that I am not very excitable or adventurous as I am a very structured person.

This survey was meaningful in a way helping me to re-evaluate how I may present myself at work. While I enjoy my structure and discipline, my creativity and curiosity may have lessened over the years; I used to be full of ideas and new ways of going about things. Kindness and love were number 3 and 4. I think love should be at the top. Incorporating this into my personal life, my husband and my family should prioritize my work achievements, as they are my most important achievements.

Journal activity 3.1 Courage Activity

This activity asked me to describe a time that I have acted courageously. I think this described when I decided to enroll in college and complete my bachelor’s degree in Psychology at the age of 34. Psychologically is was courageous because I have been out of school for 17 years. Not to mention a mother of 4 and working full time as a mental health case manager and supervisor. At the time, I thought why in the world would you want to add this much stress on an already added stressful situation. I talked myself into this because I wanted to further my career. Although my experience of 14 years at Elizabeth Layton Center landed me as a supervisor, I desire to be able to do more. Not more power, I actually would love to work as a crisis intervention screener. I cannot do this without my license. Capella was fitting for my busy life; it took me over one month to build the courage to make the phone call enroll.

This activity was meaning to me because it reminded why I keep pushing through. I learned that although this act was not as adventurous as most such as skydiving, I did have to dig deep inside myself to find the courage to achieve my goals. Incorporating this into my personal and professional life, this story reminded me of how close I am and how far I have come and how happy it makes me feel to know that I followed through with my dreams.

Journal activity 3.3 Honesty Activity

This exercise just happened very recently and was a very difficult time. I have a friend at work, we have been friends almost the entire time I have worked for the company. This friend is in a different department, and I do not supervise him. I was in his office talking as he was typing a note for a client. I noticed that the time in the record for this client was during the time I was in his office talking. I made a comment about the time, and he said: “shoot I’ll go back and change it.” I did not think anything about it other than he had a client scheduled at this time and maybe he saw them earlier than the scheduled time. The times automatically populate as we schedule. Later in the week, I was asked to look into case manager’s schedule as we had an emergency that needed to be covered. I had a look at this person’s schedule and noticed another completed client note and conflict with time. Almost the same incident except he had been in the lobby area and break area with various co-workers as this specific time he was billing.

I knew what was happening, and at first, I was scared, nervous and then just sad. My integrity and honesty outweighed my friendship to this person. I was very angry at him for putting himself in the position, for unknowingly putting me in this position as well as not treating his client with value. I reported first to my director, then to quality assurance as well as followed up with an incident report. There was an investigation made, and it took several weeks of monitoring by quality assurance, but ultimately it led to his termination. I was not a part of anything after the initial report but, I was very upset more about the change and losing a close friend.

I think this challenged me to because there was a split second I was more worried about my friendship than what was right. Ultimately, it came down to my own moral and ethical standards. This was more than lying it was Medicaid fraud. I did what was right because honestly is important to me as well as fairness (as learned above) and his clients were not being treated fairly. I was reminded that honesty and integrity are the key ingredients of developing trust. This job is based on trust and the ability to work independently.
