The United States Department of Defense Space-Based Communications Vulnerability to Attack

Abstract
The employment of space systems by the United States increases the efficiency of combat and deterrence strategies by performing as a force multiplier. However, the communication systems are vulnerable to attack from opponents of the worthy cause such as competitor nations and terrorist organizations. The main objective of this study is to provide different methods of increasing security in space bases networks. The methodology used in the research includes space object tracking and identification measures, the use of optical tracking and imaging systems and the use of radar tracking and optical systems. The methodology employed was primarily intended on sealing loopholes used by attackers. The research findings were that the use of Counter Space Denial and Deception, the use of Electronic Attack on communications, data and command links and the use of Standoff Weapons were instrumental in increasing security for space-based networks. The research concluded by stating that the early deployment of these countermeasures will be helpful in reducing the vulnerability of the Unites States Department of Defense space-based communication.
