LP1 Assignment: Ethical Concerns in Marketing and Sales

This assignment will assess Competency 1: Differentiate between the concepts of marketing and sales.

Directions

We have been studying the important role that ethics and social responsibility play in the marketing and sales process. With that in mind, reflect on this case:

Gary Caplan has developed a new energy drink designed to burn calories while sleeping. He intends to market this drink to grossly overweight consumers--20 percent of Americans, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Gary's mother, a doctor, argues that it's unethical to target the obese--that they are just as vulnerable a target market as children or the elderly.

Consider the following questions in an essay of 400 - 500 words:

  • Based on your research and studies, is Gary targeting a "vulnerable" market? Why or why not?
  • Does the AMA statement of ethics address this issue? How?
  • How might the concepts of marketing and sales--and in particular, differentiating between the two--address this issue?

In addition to information from class discussions and our textbook, you may choose to use outside examples and research to support your positions. Begin your search for these resources in the NAU Online Library's Business Subject Guide. Be sure to cite all your references using APA format.

Submit this assignment to your instructor via the dropbox "LP1.1 Assignment: Ethical Concerns in Marketing and Sales." This assignment is worth 110 points and will be graded according to the Graduate General Writing Assignments Rubric.
