Essay 3: Bluebeard Essay
Specifications: Length: Approx. 350 words (roughly 1 ½ pages)
Format: Times New Roman, 12 pt; Double Spaced with NO additional spaces between
paragraphs (change the default); 1” side margins
Citation Format: MLA should be used in this paper. Provide a Works Cited page following
your text. This page must be properly formatted according to MLA citation style.
Identification: Include your name, the class (ART 1110), and the date in the upper, left corner
of the first page. Do not include my name.
Page Numbers: Include page numbers and your last name in the upper, right corner of every
paper. (Example: Tangeman 2)

Instructions: Using the entire book, select ONE of the questions below to write a detailed, 350-word
(approximately 1 ½ page) essay. Include information from reliable sources as well as several
selected short quotations from the book itself. You must use both in-text citations and a sources
cited list, even for quotations from Bluebeard. Wikipedia is not a reliable.
1. Why does the author have the main character, Rabo, also narrate the book? How does this affect your involvement with his story?
2. What happens to the abstract expressionist paintings that Rabo created? What does this teach us about artists’ materials?
3. Why do you think Rabo switch from abstraction to realism for his final painting? 4. Why does Rabo decide to become an Abstract Expressionist? What role do you think
his experience in World War II played in his decision?
5. Why do you think that Rabo uses the canvases of Windsor Blue Number Seventeen for his final masterpiece?

30% writing and research (including use of quotations)

This essay is due as a hardcopy in class Tuesday, August 2, 2016. Failure to submit your paper
by the due date provided will result in one letter grade deduction per day, beginning 1:40 PM on
day it is due. The grade will drop by one letter grade each subsequent day, up to 2 days. No
papers will be received after August 4 at 1:40 PM. If you have an excused absence your essay
must be emailed to me prior to conclusion of class to receive full credit. There are no exceptions.
This paper is worth 50 points.
