Chapter 13 deals with a harsh reality many of us have faced one way or another, or may well face sometime in the future: divorce.  Paradoxically, we often hear the statistic “50% of all marriages will end in divorce”, but yet, close to 90% of us will marry at least once in our lives! In class, I make the following analogy to students: would you board a commercial flight where the airline company says, “we have a 50% chance of getting you safely to your destination”? I know what my response would be. Obviously NONE of us believes that we are going to be the statistic that will be on the side of divorce someday.  Note that some of us by virtue of age, social class, race and ethnicity, etc. may have a higher probability than the often 50% probability cited but yet we continue to marry.
