Writing Task #2
· For HW, you up to line 960 of Beowulf. For this discussion board post, I'd like you to consider the following questions regarding the Beowulf poet's portrayal of the Grendel. What words are used to describe Grendel? What connotations do these words give to the reader? What motivates Grendel to attack and terrorize Heorot? How is Grendel alienated from the Germanic warrior society, and what kind of threat does he pose to this society? Do we, as readers, feel satisfied by Beowulf's slaying of Grendel?
· Notes: Since we don't know the author of Beowulf's name, please refer to s/he as the Beowulf author/poet/bard.
· I also expect you to quote from the text. When you do so, please use proper quotation and citation adhering to MLA style with the line # in parentheses and a / to indicate a line break. For example:
· The Beowulf poet writes, "Often, for undaunted courage, / Fate spares the man it has not already marked" (l.572-3).
