The laboratory gives the student the opportunity to test theories learned in lecture and see the concepts applied to actual situations. Students will conduct experiments, write up results and draw conclusions. Each student will work with their group partners to set-up equipment, take data, analyze the data and apply what was learned in the experiment.

Learning Objectives: By the end of the course students will be able to:
1) Describe and conduct experiments to detect the presence of electrical charge. 2) Describe and conduct experiments to determine how charged objects behave and if objects have the same
or opposite charges. 3) Describe and conduct experiments demonstrating Gauss’ Law. 4) Describe and conduct experiments on the behavior of electric fields and voltages in and around conductors. 5) Describe and conduct measurements on resistor circuits. 6) Describe Kirchoff’s Laws and confirm the predictions made by experiment. 7) Describe and conduct experiments demonstrating the interaction between magnetic fields and current
carrying wires. 8) Describe and conduct experiments to measure the charge to mass ratio of the electron. 9) Describe and conduct experiments on electromagnetic induction. 10) Describe and conduct measurements on AC Circuits.

Safety:
● Safety rules are found in this syllabus. General rules are: ○ Students are not allowed to be in the lab without the instructor present even if the door is open. ○ Students are not allowed to be in the lab after the scheduled end of the lab period. ○ Persons exhibiting unsafe behavior may be required to leave the class and receive a zero for the
assignment and/or quiz for that day. ○ Persons not wearing closed toed shoes will be required to leave and receive zeroes for both the
assignment and quiz for that day. Examples of allowed and disallowed shoes are found in the document Guide to Acceptable Shoes for Physics Lab.pdf which is found on the course Blackboard page under Content.
○ Note: Our lab is below the biology labs on the 2nd floor of Santan Hall and the chemistry labs on the 3rd floor. Because of this, it is not safe to assume that any liquid on the floor of our lab is water.
o Notify your instructor immediately if you are pregnant, colorblind, allergic to any insects or chemicals, taking immunosuppressive drugs, or have any other medical conditions (such as diabetes or immunological defects) that may require special precautionary measures in the laboratory. This information will be kept strictly confidential.
o The following apparel is mandatory for entry into the lab: sleeved shirts closed toed shoes and long or knee length pants only. See the Guide to Acceptable Shoes for Physics Lab on the Blackboard page.
o Upon entering the laboratory, place all books, coats, purses, backpacks, etc. in designated areas, not on the bench tops.
o Locate and, when appropriate, learn to use exits, fire extinguisher, fire blanket, chemical shower, eyewash, first aid kit, broken glass container, and cleanup materials for spills.
o In case of fire, evacuate the room and assemble outside the building in your designated area. o Do not eat, drink, smoke or apply cosmetics in the laboratory. Screw top beverage containers
may be placed in a designated area. Take them out of the lab to drink from them. Do not bring food into the laboratory. All food must be consumed outside the laboratory and before class starts.
o Wear eye protection when told to by your instructor. You must furnish your own safety glasses. o Do not use equipment without instruction o Report all spills and accidents to your instructor immediately. o Do not allow any liquid to come into contact with electrical cords. o Handle electrical connectors with dry hands. o Do not attempt to disconnect electrical equipment that crackles, smokes or snaps. o Do not look directly into laser beams.

o Do not pick up broken glassware with your hands. Use a broom and dustpan and discard the glass in designated glass waste container: never discard with paper waste.
o Leave the laboratory clean and organized for the next group of students. o The caution symbol points out instruments, substances and procedures that require special
attention to safety.
o Any bodily fluid is to be treated as a hazardous material. Do not attempt to clean it up yourself. o Any female who is pregnant or thinks she may be pregnant may opt out of the radiation lab.
Disruptive Behavior:
● Disruptive behavior will not be tolerated. This includes but is NOT limited to: ○ Verbal abuse of another student or the instructor including teasing, unwanted physical contact with
another student or the instructor and violent behavior. ○ Possession of a weapon. ○ Possession or distribution of illegal drugs. ○ Possession and/or use of fireworks or explosives. ○ Any other behavior as defined in Arizona Board of Reagents Policy Manual, Chapter 5, sections

Attendance:
● You are expected to attend all scheduled meetings of your lab section and arrive on time and remain in class until all experimental data is gathered by your group. Attendance will be taken at the beginning of each lab. Note the following:
o If you arrive after the clicker quiz has started, you will not be able to take this quiz. o If you arrive after the experiment has started, you may be required to leave and receive a
zero for the script. o After the class has started, you are not allowed to leave the room unless the assigned
work is completed or you are excused to leave by the instructor. o If you know in advance that you are not going to be in class or are running late, please try
to contact me in advance. ● There will be no makeup labs, quizzes or tests. You are expected to complete labs, quizzes and tests with
your assigned instructor. While some labs may be short, plan to attend the full class time. ● Do not schedule any other classes or activities during this time. ● Do not schedule any activities, such as classes at another campus, which will make
you often late. For example, a class at the Tempe campus should end at least one hour before the start of the lab.
● Excused Absences: ○ A missed class may be excused and/or substitute work given for:
■ Religious Observances: Students should inform the instructor at the start of the semester of any classes that will be missed due to religious observances.
■ Participation in University Sanctioned Activities: students who participate in university- sanctioned activities that require classes to be missed, will be given opportunities to make up examinations and other graded in-class work. However, absence from class or examinations due to university-sanctioned activities does not relieve students from responsibility for any part of the course work required during the period of the absence. Students should inform the instructor at the start of the semester of any classes that will be missed.
■ Extreme Hardship: Students should provide documentation of the hardship such as doctor’s notes in the case of illness obituaries in the case of a death etc.
■ Internships: Missed classes due to conflicts with working hours for interns are not excusable and no make-up work will be given. If an internship MUST start before the end of the semester and the times conflict with class time, documentation explaining why the internship must be started before the end of the semester must be provided from both the employer and the ASU official responsible for the internship.

Participation:
● Each experiment will be done as part of a group. It is required that every student participates in lab activities: equipment set-up and operation, data collection and data analysis. Participation points will be deducted if this requirement is not met.
● Lab groups may be re-arranged periodically by the instructor to facilitate this. ● Students found working on assignments etc. from other classes, including the lecture associated with this
lab will receive a warning on the first occurrence and a 0 for the lab script on each additional occurrence.

Lab Scripts and Reports:
● It is required that students print the lab Scripts from Blackboard BEFORE class. The printers in the lab rooms may NOT be used to print scripts.
○ At the discretion of the instructor, students without a printed lab script may receive a 0 for the script.
○ I may bring some extra copies of lab scripts to the class. Do not rely on me to have extra copies. ○ Students found printing scripts from the lab printers will receive a 0 for the lab script.
● The lab scripts will serve as the lab report. The script is worth 100 points. This includes the pre-lab. ● The prelab questions will be done as a group at the beginning of the lab. ● The completed lab scripts will be due according to the schedule in this syllabus.
○ Lab scripts, including the prelab, are to be submitted to Blackboard as a single document,
Microsoft Word and PDF files are preferred, however, pictures of the lab script may be submitted as long as:
1) The pictures are readable 2) The pictures are combined into a single file.
○ Include all plots and graphs to support your calculations unless told otherwise. ○ All graphs will be computer generated unless otherwise instructed.
■ The graphs will be printed in class and included in the same file as the completed lab script. Graphs will have a title and labeled axes and a font large enough to read (12 point or larger).
■ I reserve the right to deduct points when graphs do not meet the requirements. ● Late scripts may be accepted at the discretion of the instructor.
Quizzes:
● Quizzes will be given at the end of the week over the labs done during that week. It may or may not use clickers.
● At the beginning of each class, a quiz either on paper or using clickers will be given over the theory section of the lab script.

Your lowest lab script will be dropped, except in cases where the grade was given because of violations
of policies and statements in this syllabus and/or violations of university policy. Grade Correction/Appeals
o Check Blackboard weekly and bring any grade issues to me immediately. o Any disagreements on assignment grades must be submitted within 1 week of your receipt of
returned, graded work. Failure to meet this deadline will constitute agreement with your grade. o For work completed the last week of class disagreements on assignment grades must be submitted
by August 9, 2016 at 5:00 P.M. Failure to meet this deadline will constitute agreement with your grade.
o Appeals of your final grade listed in Blackboard must be submitted by Noon on August 10, 2016. Failure to meet this deadline will constitute agreement with your grade.
o Requests to fix “typos” in your posted final grade must be submitted by Noon on August 11, 2016. Failure to meet this deadline will constitute agreement with your course grade.
Electronic Devices: ● Cell phones are to be stored in your backpack or bag. They are not to be placed on the lab table. ● Cell phones may not be used as calculators. You must have a calculator. Using a cell phone
as a calculator may result in a deduction of points on the lab script or quiz/test or a zero for the script or quiz.

● For experiments where a timer is required, ONE and only one student may have their cell phone at the lab table to use as a timer. It must be placed back in the backpack or bag after the part of the experiment where a timer is needed is finished.
