Troubador, comrade, master, friend, love: these are just some of the terms used by these two very successful and celebrated 19th century authors referring to each other in their letters.
First published in 1884, the letters have been translated into English several times (although only one of them is available for free online).

Discussion Question:
Sand (her pen name) was a noted Romantic writer; Flaubert was an early Realist. Do you notice elements of these two schools in their letters to each other? Find an example for each and write a few sentences on what makes your selection Romantic or Realist.
