Interpersonal Communications Unit 3 Assignment
Kaplan University
1. Describe Jim’s self-concept.
The self-concept of Jim was that he was a mere an average student in college which is a typical example of the Negative Direct Definition . Accordingly, Jim was not naturally smart compared to his Dad. Jim had a feeling that irrespective of how hard he could have studied, he lacked the capability to measure up to his parents’ expectations of him. His parents had a high expectation since they were paying Jim’s way through school.
2. Explain, using examples from the video and course concepts, how Jim’s self-concept impacted his interaction with his father. Was it positive or negative?
Based on the video, I had a feeling that the impact of the interaction between Jim and his father was a positive one. I am of the argument that Jim was trying his best to undertake whatever he could to uplift his grades. Jim had a belief he was doing his best in school. Jim subsequently felt that his parents had unrealistic expectations for him . The conversation of Jim with his Dad made Jim feel as though he was not doing enough. Moreover, this conversation made him feel that his Dad was just negative by blaming his grades on his partying alongside his friends.
3. Explain, using examples from the video and course concepts, how the father’s self-concept impacted his interaction with Jim. Was it positive or negative?
As reflected in the video, I had a feeling that Jim’s father towards him was negative. The father had a much expectation from Jim without even noticing could have been the major trigger for Jim’s average performance. The father of Jim had a feeling that if he could pay his way through the college and subsequently make Phi Beta Kappa, then his son (Jim) had the capability to do with his grades. The father of Jim additionally had a feeling that if his son would party with his friends less and devote part of his play time to his studies, Jim could get better grades than the average one he got stuck into. Jim took his father’s self-concept as a negative one according to his opinion.
4. Apply the process of perception, starting on p. 64 to explain the interaction between Jim and his father.
The perception process begins with the selection. In this case, Jim’s Dad is feeling the one thing that the average grades of Jim could be blamed on Jim’s lack of study due to partying with friends. Both organization and cognitive schemata which were employed by Jim’s Dad were the prototypes of the perfect student of a college. Jim had a deep belief that his Dad was a brilliant one and that the college remained a breeze to his Dad whereas it took Jim more effort to make the average grades.
5. Offer two tips for Jim and two tips for his father, using the guidelines for improving perception and communication (starting on p.79) and explain how these tips could be applied in an efficient way.
For Jim’s father, he should understand that there is a need first to appreciate and encourage Jim’s average achievement and go further to investigate the biggest problem for Jim’s inability to surpass the average performance. For Jim, he should learn to take criticisms positively and work towards incorporating what his critiques say. Moreover, he should also have self-efficacy and begin to see everything as a possibility.
