1 PLANNING - IS THE FIRST PHASE AND IT DETERMINES WHETHER THERE IS A NEED FOR A NEW SYSTEM SO AS TO ACHIEVE STRATEGIC OBJECTIVES OF THE BUSINESS. IT USUALLY THE FEASIBILITY STUDY OR PRELIMINARY PLAN FOR A BUSINESS INITIATIVE OF A COMPANY TO GET THE RESOURCES REQUIRED TO BUILD AN INFRASTRUCTURE TO IMPROVE OR MODIFY THE COMPANY. "THE PURPOSE OF THIS STEP IS TO FIND OUT THE SCOPE OF THE PROBLEM UNDER STUDY AND DETERMINE SOLUTIONS, AND RESOURCES, COSTS, TIME, BENEFITS AND MORE ARE THE ITEMS THAT NEED TO BE CONSIDERED AT THIS STAGE" 5 (MISHRA & DUBEY, 2013, P. 64).
3 SYSTEM ANALYSIS AND REQUIREMENT – THIS IS THE SECOND PHASE, AND IT INVOLVES AN ORGANIZATION WORKING ON THE NEED FOR CHANGE OR THE SOURCE OF THEIR PROBLEM. 6 SYSTEM ANALYSIS TAKES PLACE AT THIS STAGE. Consideration related to functional requirements of the system is carried out here. The needs of users are also done here.
1 SYSTEMS DESIGN – NECESSARY OPERATIONS, FEATURES, AND SPECIFICATION REQUIRED TO SATISFY FUNCTIONAL REQUIREMENTS OF THE SYSTEM THAT HAS BEEN PROPOSED WILL BE IN PLACE. THIS IS WHERE END USERS ARE REQUIRED TO TALK ABOUT AND DETERMINE THEIR PARTICULAR BUSINESS INFORMATION NEEDS WHEN IT COMES TO THE PROPOSED SYSTEM. SOME OTHER THINGS THAT END USERS ALSO CONSIDER AT THIS PHASE ARE ESSENTIAL COMPONENTS (SUCH AS HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE), PROCEDURES AND PROCESSING OF THE SYSTEM SO AS TO ATTAIN ITS OBJECTIVES, AND STRUCTURE (NETWORKING CAPABILITIES).
Development – it is the 4th stage and is where information system or information technology project will be created and programmed. 6 THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THIS ROLE IS ASSUMED BY SYSTEM DESIGNERS. They take an active role in preparing the new system.
Integration and testing – the stage entails integrating and testing the system. This is done by quality assurance professionals. They will establish if the design meets entity’s goals planned in the first stage. Testing of the proposed system will be repeated. This is
done to check for interoperability, bugs, and errors. This will be repeated until that time that the end user will feel the system has attained an acceptable level.
Implementation – Implementation entails installing the system that has been newly developed. 3 AT THIS STAGE IS WHERE THE BUSINESS IS PUT INTO PRODUCTION. 1 THE END USERS AND SYSTEM ANALYSTS NEED TO SEE THE REALIZATION OF THE PROJECT, WHICH HAS IMPLEMENTED CHANGES.
Operation and maintenance - maintenance and future changes if the is need takes place in this final stage of SDLC. Also, at this step, the end users can fine tune the system. This is if they feel there is a need to boost the performance of the system. They can also call for additional user requirement or add new capabilities to the system.
7 DESCRIBE A 4 STEP SDLC MODEL THE 4 STEP SDLC HAS FOUR STEP, WHICH ARE PLANNING, ANALYSIS, DESIGN, AND IMPLEMENTATION. 8 BELOW ARE THE DETAILS FOR THE STEPS:
Planning – this is usually the first step when it comes to 4 Step SDLC model. It is at this stage where the steering committee gets a request related to the development of a project. 8 THE FOCUS OF THE COMMITTEE WILL BE DIRECTED TOWARDS A REVIEW OF THE PROJECT, PRIORITIZATION AND ALLOCATION OF RESOURCES, AND DETERMINATION OF PROJECT DEVELOPMENT TEAM. Also, a feasibility analysis will be performed here so as to measure how suitable system development is to the company. The viability of the project will be established. There are four feasibility tests that will be performed during this stage. These are:
Operational feasibility – this is performed to ensure future of software Schedule feasibility – to make sure the project will operate as required within the period specified. It also becomes a point of reference with regards to what should be done, when, and why.
Economic feasibility – another name for this is benefits or cost feasibility. This is carried out to make sure that the entity can collect the resources that are needed for the completion of the project (Mishra & Dubey, 2013).
8 TECHNICAL FEASIBILITY – THIS MAKES IT POSSIBLE FOR THE ORGANIZATION TO ESTABLISH WHETHER OR NOT THE NEW SYSTEM IS FEASIBLE. There is no need to use a lot of resources to make a system that cannot be used by the organization.
Analysis – preliminary investigation is usually carried out at this stage. 9 THE PRELIMINARY INVESTIGATION CAN ALSO BE TERMED AS FEASIBILITY STUDIES BECAUSE IT INVOLVES DETAILED ANALYSIS OF THE PERFORMANCE OF THE SYSTEM. 7 THERE ARE THREE THINGS THAT TAKE PLACE IN THE ANALYSIS OF PERFORMANCE. 3 THESE ARE STUDYING THE CURRENT WORKING SYSTEM, DETERMINING THE NEEDS OF USERS, AND RECOMMENDING A SOLUTION, WHICH IS REGARDED AS LOGIC DESIGN.
Determining the exact nature of the problem takes place in the preliminary investigation. Also, improvement to be performed may also be determined here. Assessment will be performed with regards to the practicability of the newly proposed project.
Design – this is the third stage of the SDLC, and what take place is software and hardware acquisition. Development of the new system may occur here, or modification of the system may be undertaken. In this stage, detailed development of the design is done. Specification for components will have to be done. 9 SOME OF THE ACTIVITIES THAT WILL BE EVIDENT HERE ARE PROGRAM DESIGN, ARCHITECTURE DESIGN, THE INTERFACE DESIGN, PHYSICAL DESIGN, AND INPUT AND OUTPUT DESIGN.
Implementation – this is the last stage. Building and installation of the new system take place in this stage. The major thin that will be evident here is building the new system or doing some modification and eventually delivering it to end users to interact with it. 9 SOME OF THE MAJOR ACTIVITIES THAT ARE EVIDENT HERE ARE
CONVERSION TO THE NEW SYSTEM, TRAINING USERS, INSTALLING AND TESTING THE NEW SYSTEM, AND DEVELOPING PROGRAMS. There are a number of tests that are usually performed in this stage. These are:
Unit test – to make sure each and every program is working independently System test
– to ensure all programs in the system are working together Integration test – to verify that the application is working with other applications.
Comparison the 7 Step Model and the 4 step SDLC model Comparison Both the 7 Step Model and the 4 step model have long time frame as a result of lengthy process related to developing the system In both the two models, the system requirements and user requirements have to be well understood before the process of development begins. This will help ensure changes are made at early stages of system development (Rastogi, 2015).
10 THE DEVELOPMENT TEAM IN BOTH 7 STEP MODEL AND THE 4 STEP MODEL HAS BETTER CONTROL OF THE PROCESS WHEN IT COMES TO RESOURCES AND COST DUE TO THOROUGH KNOWLEDGE OBTAINED FROM SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS.
11 BOTH THE TWO MODELS CALL FOR HIGH EXPERTISE SINCE REQUIREMENT SPECIFICATIONS START AT THE BEGINNING EVEN BEFORE DEVELOPMENT STARTS.
Contrast There is overlapping of some phases in 4 step model, but this is not evident in the 7 step model. Overlapping occurs in 4 steps due to its sequential nature.
10 IN THE 4 STEP MODEL, USER INCORPORATION OCCURS THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE PROCESS OF DEVELOPMENT, BUT IN 7 STEP MODEL, USERS ARE INVOLVED ONLY DURING THE PRELIMINARY INVESTIGATION.
3 THE COST OF DEVELOPMENT IN 4 STEP MODEL IS VERY HIGH COMPARED TO THAT OF 7 STEP MODEL, WHICH IS LOW. Higher costs are attributed to iterations in each and every step. At each iteration, there is a high expense, which makes the whole model to be very expensive.
The 4 step system development life cycle model is believed to be more flexible compared to the 7 step model. The reason for this flexibility is because it gives room for changes and modifications during the process of development. The 7 step model does give room for changes during its process of development.
