Formal Report Requirements

  • The topic and report type must be that which you proposed in your formal report proposal.
  • The topic must be associated with or closely related to your major field of study.
  • The Formal Report must be precise and technically correct.
  • The Formal Report must follow the appropriate outline provided in the course text for the type of report you’re producing.

Formal Report Requirements

The Formal Report must contain the following sections:

  • Transmittal letter (see page 333 in course text)
  • Title page
  • Informative abstract (see Chapter 12 in course text)

Highlight your main points. Entice the reader to read more.

  • Standard Introduction (Purpose/Background/Scope)
  • Discussion (main part of your paper)

Subheadings, as you see fit.

  • Conclusion (summary of main points in your paper)
  • List of References (minimum of 5)
  • Appendix (as appropriate)

Formal Report Requirements

The Formal Report must be 10-12 pages in length, not counting the transmittal letter, title page, abstract, table of contents (if used), reference list, or appendix.

  • The Formal Report must comply with one of the following formats:
  • Proposal
  • Progress Report
  • Feasibility or Recommendation Report
  • Laboratory or Project Report
  • Historical or State-of-the-art Report

You are not permitted to write a set of instructions or a manual for your Formal Report.

Report Types

  • Proposal
  • Must be in response to an RFP or must propose a solution to an observed problem
  • Follow the template in Chapter 6 in your course text

  • Progress Report
  • Must be about a project you are currently working on
  • Must follow the template in Chapter 7 of your course text

  • Feasibility Report
  • Examines one problem and the viability of one proposed solution
  • Recommendation Report
  • Examines one problem and the viability of n number of solutions
  • Must follow the template(s) in Chapter 8 of your course text

  • Laboratory Report
  • Must describe in detail the execution of a laboratory project that tests a hypothesis
  • Project Report
  • Must describe in detail the execution of a class project—will not test a hypothesis
  • Must follow the template(s) in Chapter 9 of the course text

  • Historical Research Report
  • Describes the evolution of a technology or idea over a specific period of time, usually in the past
  • State-of-the-art Research Report
  • Describes the evolution and expected advancements of a technology or idea from the present (2005 and later) into the future
  • Must follow the template(s) in Chapter 11 of your course text

Proposal Assignment

  • Guides the development of the Formal Report assignment
  • Follows the example on page 101 in your course text
  • Must include an annotated bibliography of 8 entries
  • Annotated bibliography will be posted in Course Studio
