YOU CAN DO IT

“The brick walls are there for a reason. The brick walls are not there to keep us out. The brick walls are there to give us a chance to show how badly we want something. Because the brick walls are there to stop the people who do not want it badly enough. They are there to stop the other people.” That quote is derived a famous author by the name of Randy Pausch, from his top rated book The Last Lecture. I take away many things from that quote but what I most find to be intriguing about it is the fact that he explains why there is a brick wall, which is to give us, the people a chance to embark on a path of perseverance.

Perseverance is like nothing else because without it there would be no real pursuit of happiness. I believe that persistence is the key factor of perseverance; it also goes into a different form by being a long continued application. For many years Perseverance has been a big part of my life, being enlisted into the armed forces, I found at times for it can be tough for military personnel to adjust to the lifestyle of the Navy, Army, Airforce, etc. However, a good friend of mine would always say that there is a light at the end of the tunnel, and for years, those kind words stuck with me and helped me to persevere to do bigger and better things.

I could go on for days explaining to you why perseverance is by far the best and most valued of all virtues, but my words would fall on deaf ears if I failed to tell you about why it should be important to you. Whether you are trying to lose weight, get a better job, or better yet in your case get a degree, it is best to surround yourself with the greatest of all virtues, perseverance. Being able to fight through any struggle or complications puts you in the mode to get through circumstance is the face of perseverance. Doing something when someone told you that it cannot be done is perseverance. Without perseverance there can be no success to accomplish or be great at anything, think of it as the only thing that will make you unique.

Self-discipline, confidence, and determination are all very similar virtues of perseverance. They all intertwine within one another by the fact that you cannot have perseverance if these concepts do not play their role. However, in many ways, perseverance can differ from self-discipline, confidence, and determination. When you compare determination and perseverance, think of it in this way, when you put your mind towards a goal, and you take off running top speed towards it, that is determination. However, as we all may know there will be a lot or a maybe a few obstacles in your way and then comes perseverance.

Perseverance can be taught and fostered at any age, but it is done best at a young age. Naming it, showing self-talk, positive spin, and providing reminders can all be used as fostering tools for perseverance. So what does perseverance feel or sound like? It is sometimes hard to develop anything without coaching, which is why showing or teaching self-talk I believe is the most important tool to utilize when learning about or fostering perseverance into daily life. Using example phrases such as “Don’t give up the ship” a quote by James Lawrence, which was his dying wish in 1813 aboard the USS Chesapeake, will assist in resonating perseverance.

The effect of perseverance is a person that will say yes I can as they are getting up after being knocked down. They will continue to get up no matter how many times they get knocked down. Moreover, as per the effect of perseverance comes the result of it. If you continue to strive for greatness no matter how many times you get knocked down, no matter how many times you suffer, no matter how many times we fail, you’ve got to know that there is light at the end of the road.

At no point in life does perseverance become an undesirable virtue, it is only an endless list of greatness that will come from it. The moment in our life that perseverance becomes an adverse virtue is the time that all hope is lost, in which many people fall into this category and mostly accepts the title of “loser.” All virtues are desirable, doing what means most to you is a virtue, therefore doing what means most to you is desirable, correct? In your opinion, if you feel that any virtue especially that of perseverance at any time undesirable, then I say to you “While the people are virtuous they cannot be subdued; but when once they lose their virtue, they will be ready to surrender their liberties to the first external or internal invader.” Having quoted Samuel Adams, I believe you catch my drift that any loss of virtues will result in self-destruction.

Perseverance has adopted many principles, but to name only two that are most important is that of succeeding because you are determined to not because you are destined and to know that perseverance does not demand more than we have but more so all that we can give. Being committed or determined to accomplish something means that you have a desire to go out and do something great because you have an active mind to do anything, and to remember that there is nothing you can not do if you make the time and effort to do it.

Perseverance is the secret key to success, which is one the many truths related to perseverance. Every action has a reaction, so hard labor is not an alternative, but much rather key to success. Perseverance is touch and is not for the weakhearted. To simplify the truths of perseverance is summed up to this, whatever knocks you down or whatever makes you sick should be the same reasons behind your perseverance.

The word perseverance is made up of patience, persistence, and fight. These constituent parts make up a formula to assist you in developing into something great which is also summed up into one virtue. By being patience and know when to do the something means you can better observe your object to fewer faults. Persistence gives you the oomph to continue through adversity so that you never give up. Moreover, fight assists you in getting up when being knocked down and to conquer anything that gets in your way.

Lethargy, cowardice, cravenness, and shiftlessness are are all antonyms of perseverance but what is the opposite you may ask? Well, I believe I have the answer you are looking for in this question. Irresolute is strictly resembled to be the 180-degree turn you want for the word perseverance. Irresolute means showing or feeling hesitancy or uncertainty. That of being indecisive will embark on the close path to the word irresolute. Hesitancy is defined as the quality or state of being hesitant, which on others words, you do not know what you want in life therefore there is nothing to fight for in the face of adversity.

To summarize all that we have learned perseverance is again like no other virtue, it has to be reached by many to do something great. It does not matter if you are destined to do something or not, by having perseverance and believing in yourself then anything is possible. There is no time that perseverance should be listed as an undesirable virtue for it is the word irresoluble that should be eradicated. To define perseverance in one sentence, I would have to put it like this, the ability to pursue and be persistent through adversity in the state of motivation and determination. Take away from this whatever you must but always remember, persevere through anything and you’ll achieve everything.
