Context: This week’s topic has been World War I, or the Great War, an epoch changing 5 year event that converted Europe from the unassailable center of the global system to an unstable focus of a globe that had become too big to be governed by one small set of great powers. As the war-ending treaty talks at Versailles and other sites around Paris took place in 1919, it was clear that there was no singular or consensus point of view to govern the process. This did not bode well for a future revitalization of Europe. The one systematic treatment of both the causes and outcomes of the war that did come to the fore was Woodrow Wilson’s 14 Points, a list of policy suggestions couched in an interpretation of the world that attempted to be above the fray. In the event, only some of Wilson’s suggestions were enacted in full, and the US itself would not take part in the League of Nations or ratify the Versailles Treaty (and thus needed separate arrangements with Germany and the other belligerent nations to end the war officially).

Prompt: Taking everything into consideration (i.e. the war itself, the social changes that preceded the war and those that happened during the conflict, the economic situation of 1919, and the political situation), would strictly following Wilson’s 14 Points have created the stability that was necessary to bring a successful end to the war?
