Ronald Reagan
Peace is not absence of conflict, it is the ability to handle conflict by peaceful means
Causes of conflict
Divergent opinion
When individuals base their opinions and solutions to problems from different schools of thought there will be conflict. Management has to find a common ground and train their employees to focus their energies towards that.
Most of the opinion is shaped by the learning institutions and family background. Management should be careful in selection to ensure that the candidates for positions are from sound institutions and have proper backing
(Goetsch & Davis, 2014)
Causes of Conflict
Causes of Conflict
Selfishness
This is where one individual or group of individual seek to pursue objectives that are only beneficial to them or to a section of the whole team. The other individuals feel left out and aggrieved.
It is the duty of management to ensure that there is fair allocation of organizational resources and that the team is generally well taken care of in a balanced manner. Poor treatment of a section of the team is breeding ground for selfish behavior.
Causes of Conflict
Causes Of Conflict
Different Objectives
The department or organization as a whole must have singular objectives that are pointed towards a similar goal. Difference in objectives and direction of the department, or organization is cause for conflict.
These objectives should be clearly communicated and understood by the individuals that are supposed to uphold them and ensure their fruition.
Causes of Conflict
Poor communication
Sending the wrong information to the wrong individual creates misinformed individuals who start spreading roomers and cause conflict. Should personal information find its way to the wrong hands these individuals will feel aggrieved
Not knowing how to communicate also leads to similar fate. It leads to poorly delivered information, wrong information and misleading information. Basing decisions on such information could be as lost as the resources that are used to convey that information
(Suter & Johnson, 2014)
Causes of Conflict
Unhealthy competition
This is brought about by bad policy that does not specify what an individuals position in the organization affords him. It leads to such individuals fighting for what is not entitled to them.
It is also brought about by scarcity of organizational resources. These could include office space, residence, cars, membership to clubs, entitlement to organizational positions among others
(Thompson, 2013)
Causes of Conflict
Bad policy
When management does not structure its policy to create a strong organizational culture, it breeds conflict. Policy is used to shape the behavior of individuals in an organization. Having poor policy means getting poor results
Policy should be structured to be fair and just such that it affords all employees equal opportunities at growth and development while being transparent to explain why some employees receive the treatment they are receiving.
(Kantek & Kartal, 2015)
Conclusion
Summary
The causes of conflict are all caused by individuals and are choices that are made.
Management has to carefully ensure that the choices are made by responsible individuals who have a stake in the organization or that they are guided by sound policy.
A weak policy will enslave the organization to conflict and loss in both resources and revenues, including human resources.
