The Yellowstone Caldera which is as well called the super volcano. This volcano is located in the northwest corner of Wyoming in the United States of America. The Caldera is measuring 34 by 45 miles and has had three eruptions in that past about 2.1 million years ago which led to the creation of the Island Park Caldera and the Huckleberry Ridge Tuff (Erfurt-Cooper, 2010). The Mesa Tuff eruption was 1.3 million years ago which created the Henry Fork Caldera and the Lava Creek Eruption that was 630,000 years ago, created the Yellowstone Caldera and the Lava Creek Tuff. The last eruption was estimated to be around 70,000 years ago at Mary Bay on the edge of Yellowstone Lake, which was gradual and had geothermal scattered throughout the area including famous Old Faithful Geyser. The two cities that are near are Wyoming and Montana which had an estimated population of 714,000 people who were grownups. The eruption is said to have formed 1 ft layer of molten ash 1,000 miles from the park.
The Taupo Caldera which is located in New Zealand. It is an enormous volcano in New Zealand’s largest lake, lake Taupo. The volcano is only located in the northern most part of the lake but it has multiple eruption sites within the lake. The volcano last erupted an estimated 1,800 years ago with such force that it ejected all of its volcanic material and surrounding matter was scattered across 20,000 square kilometers, completely devastating the area. This was the most violent eruption in the las 5,000 years. You can still find volcanic ash from this eruption throughout streams and rivers in New Zealand. The closest town is, you guessed it, Taupo, with a population of 23,700. I had a hard time getting a map of the predicted ash zone but the last eruption was reportedly seen in Asia and eastern Europe. Regardless, is Taupo Caldera erupts again on the same scale as previous eruptions, the loss of human life and property will be high. I shudder to think what it would do to the environment.
