Background:
Amazon is one of the leading e-commerce company delivering the products to the customer that are ordered through online on their website. The ordered item is delivered to the customer within a week or on the same day based on the delivery option that the user has selected. The fastest delivery is the same day delivery where the ordered product is delivered within 24 hours after the order has been made.
Problem:
Sometimes the same day deliveries gets delayed and are not being delivered within 24hours, due to this amazon is losing its reputation and sometime it is forced to pay the amount paid for the item as fine. Some of the causes for delivery getting delayed are huge traffic jams, accidents, delivery boys may not be available due to various reasons, bad weather, strikes or call offs. The major and most frequently occurring cause is traffic jam. In metro cities traffic jams are quite common and these jam may long up to 2 to 3hrs.
Proposed solution:
The proposed solution is to deliver the ordered items through drones. A drone is a remote controlled pilotless small aircraft. GPS navigation system will be integrated to the drone and through the laptop or through any other GPS navigation device the drone can be directed to the recipient’s address. The delivery packages are attached to the drone and delivered to the destinations which are within range of 10 miles.
Benefits:
With the use of drones there won’t be any delays in the deliveries. Since these drones travel through air there won’t be any problems like traffics jams, accidents etc and can be delivered 4 times faster than normal delivery.
Plan of action:
To implement this solution, first we need to take the permission from the aviation department and also from the government to fly the drones at specific height. Then we need to buy a drone with GPS functionality. Select a destination that is within 10 miles range and a delivery item that weighs max upto 5lbs. We also need a GPS navigation device to moitor and remote control to guide the drone. We will set the destination using google maps and direct the drone to the destination.
Budget:
A high end professional drone with GPS and camera equipped will cost around 2500$. Man hours for implementing the solution may cost around 6000$. Other miscellaneous costs may be around 1000$.
Schedule:
For getting the permissions from the government and the aviation department may take one to two months. The drone integration with GPS navigation and sample tests may take around one month. The pilot testing of the drones with actual destinations and delivery packages will be for one month.
So over all it may take around 6 months to test and get approvals for implementing it commercially in the service.
