Re:Module 4 DQ 1

Based on your dissertation research interests, identify two categorical/nominal scale IVs and one   continuous scale DV you could incorporate for your study. State the null and alternative hypotheses based on this design (with a planned analysis using a factorial ANOVA). (Research support is not required for this question.)

So my basic hypotheses is that having access to better resources can help people with gaps in employment such as parents returning to the workforce or people exiting correctional facilities gain and maintain secure employment. Alternative Hypothesis would be that resources have no effect on employment outcomes. The main way I would like to analyze this would be to see if having adequate child care and having access to adequate transportation has an effect on the wage at time of hire for a job for a person who has been out of the workforce.  This is a simple design based upon the specifications of the discussion question.  As part of my research I would also like to analyze educational background, socioeconomic status, skills set and training, previous work history, as well as many other factors that may relate to employment outcomes.  I would also like to measure more than just wage as a dependent variable, but also benefits, full time or part time status, and if the job is in a field that was preferred by the job seeker.   So I imagine the stats I will end up using may be more than a one-way ANOVA, however I am glad I am getting the opportunity to look at things in the simple form first, as these concepts are still a challenge for me.

Nominal Scale: Childcare

1-have adequate child care

2-do not have adequate child care

Nominal Scale: Transportation

1-no adequate transportation

2-public transportation

3-private vehicle or likewise

DV Continuous Scale: Wage at time of hire for job

Minimum Wage is the starting zero of the scale for US research.

I am interested in studying whether service setting affects average burnout scores for human service workers. The two service settings would be defined as facility-based settings (hospital, inpatient treatment center, outpatient treatment center) and community-based settings (shared living homes, community integration programs, in-home respite providers). The dependent variable would be defined as scores on the Maslach Burnout Inventory.

The null hypothesis is that the average burnout level for facility based employees is equal to that of community-based employees. In other words:H0: μf = μc

The alternative hypothesis is that the mean level of burnout for facility-based employees is not the same as the mean level of burnout for community-based employees. H1: μf ≠ μc

To reject the null hypothesis would be to suggest that the mean scores from both sets of employees come from different populations; that there is a significant difference between the level of burnout for human service employees working in different settings.

Re:Module 4 DQ 2

Considering the variables and design that you described in the first discussion question in this module, what information would a factorial ANOVA provide you (think of which F-values are computed and evaluated)? Why would this be significant to your research? (Research support is not required for this question.)

A factoral ANOVA can show variables between groups as well as within groups. Since I am surveying individuals in different stages of their military career, I can utilize the factoral ANOVA to determine how each groups attitudes differ between genders as well as being able to determine the differences between the groups of individuals who are just entering the military, have been in five years, ten years, fifteen years, and twenty years. This would be extremely helpful because I could not only understand how sexual assault prevention and response affects attitudes between genders, but it can show how effective the training is when military members are exposed to it on an annual basis or how ineffective it is when military members are exposed to it on an annual basis.

This research is important because most if not all research has only taken into consideration military veterans and active duty military members have not been surveyed. This training is given exclusively to active duty members so it should be understood whether or not this training is effective and just how effective it actually is over the course of an individual’s military career. I hope that by researching this topic, I will be able to shed light on how effective this training is or if it proves to have little or no effect, how we can take the information learned from this and use it to improve the program in order to actually make it an effective source of sexual assault prevention and response training.
