Philosophy Paper
PAPER #2 INSTRUCTIONS – Summer 2016
PLEASE READ CAREFULLY:
The basic objective of this paper is a summary of the “Thinking Critically” portions of Chapter 2 in the
textbook (Philosophy: A Text With Readings, 12 th Ed). These sections were in your assigned reading for
chapter 2, so you should be familiar with them. There are three sections:
1) Deductive Arguments, Validity, and Soundness (pp. 52-54) 2) Inference to the Best Explanation (pp. 71-74) 3) Evaluating an Argument’s Premises (pp. 85-87)
You do not need to include the “critical thinking” vignettes in the margins of the chapter.
Your assignment is to re-read these sections carefully, then write a detailed synopsis of each of these
sections. Your summary for each section should be 200-250 words.
Format Details:
1. Typed in MS Word or Rich Text Format only 2. 1-inch margins 3. 12-point font 4. Double-spaced lines 5. Indent first line of each paragraph, but no extra spacing between paragraphs 6. 200 words to 250 words per section listed above (I will take off points for more or less) 7. Do not use an excessive amount of quotations, or excessively long quotations in your paper 8. No need to title the paper, just put your name at the end of it.
Provide references in your paper if you have quotations (end notes or page references) from the book,
and a short bibliography (MLA or APA). Failure to provide references for any quotations directly from
outside sources (anything but yourself) is plagiarism.
I want you to concentrate on the material in the chapter, and your paper should be about the material
in the book. To avoid any misinformation or bad interpretations this information, do not use other
resources.
