Course Description and Objectives:

There is an increasing focus on product development in the engineering education sector. This change is a response to the need for engineering graduates to be able to provide immediate and tangible benefits to manufacturing companies in an era of heightened competitiveness. The focus on integrative product development aspects in the manufacturing process has been termed concurrent or simultaneous engineering, a focus which echoes long-standing themes in product development practices. Nevertheless, presenting these ideas in undergraduate engineering education calls for a departure from the usual content and pedagogical approaches.

This course is designed with a hands-on approach in mind while attempting to achieve three different goals: learning how to ideate and bring ideas to fruitfulness, learning from industry experts through guest speakers and by analyzing case studies as the basis for class discussion. Various techniques to identify opportunities for improvement and development of a comprehensive product design will be explored. Key issues and competitive product development and design optimization will include topics such as: quality function deployment; design for assembly and product variation; failure modes and effects analysis; reliability/serviceability, concurrent engineering; statistical process control, six sigma process and flexible process selection; tolerances design; rapid prototyping; design and development management issues and reducing part cost with DFM.

This class will adopt a module to allow flexibility. Students will learn the following:

Repeating Course

It is important that you succeed in this course. If you get a D, F, NC or W grade in this course, you may repeat it only once. If you receive a D, F, NC or W in this course twice, you will need to take this course at another college or file a petition (Request for Exceptional Course Repeat) with the Counseling Office. The few successful petitions each year are granted because of extenuating circumstances beyond the control of the student (see Catalog section: Repeated Courses for more details). If your petition is granted, there is no guarantee you will be able to add the course. You will be added at the discretion of the instructor and only if the class has an available space.

Academic Honesty

A successful education is founded on student honesty in and out of the classroom.

It is expected that all work submitted for grading is original, not copied from others, and that the work being graded is indeed done by the student who is receiving the grade. Cheating and plagiarism are serious violations of the student conduct code.

Cheating or plagiarizing will result in a zero on the assignment or test and may result in suspension, failure in the course, and/or other disciplinary action taken by the College. All incidents of cheating or plagiarizing are reported to the Dean of Students.

Electronic Device Policy

Electronic devices are permitted to be on in class only if they are in silent or vibrate mode. Answering calls and/or texting during lecture is not acceptable. If a student receives a call or text during lecture, the student must either ignore it, or quietly leave the room to answer. During lab, limited texting is permissible as long as it does not disturb surrounding students.

Engineering/Entrepreneur’s Notebook:

Students will keep an electronic journal that captures their Engineering/entrepreneurial thoughts and ideas. It will chronicle their “journey,” recording lessons learned about themselves and what they’re learning about throughout the term, as well as documenting problems, solutions and brainstorms along the way. It will be graded based on its “completeness” (i.e., its coverage of the entire term – at least five entries per week for all sixteen weeks), “depth of thought,” and “stretch” (i.e., its inclusion of interesting and “far out” problems and business solutions). The Notebook is due on Lecture 14 Lab session along with a presentation of the journey.

Other Course Guidelines

• All students are required to participate in group projects and labs.

• All written assignments outside of class must be typed.

• Work completed in class must be neatly handwritten.

• If a student misses a quiz there will be no make ups.

• Only the top 10 quiz scores out of 13 will be recorded for grades.
