Speech Critique: Self Evaluation

Watch your recorded classroom speech and give a thorough and honest evaluation based on the questions below. Feel free to come up with your own organization for the paper. A strong paper should take up two full pages if handwritten, or one-and-a-half pages if typed.

How to start? Assess the relevant questions below before you write your essay. (PLEASE make sure your paper’s NOT going to be just you answering each of these items one-by-one in a list!)

With regard to your speech, how well did you present your information? Did you add to the knowledge and understanding of the audience? If persuading, did you use clear persuasive language? Was your specific purpose for the speech clear? Was your thesis (and main point preview) easy to understand? Were the main points parallel and were they the most important ones to cover for this particular audience? Did your support material or examples to make your ideas clear to us? If required, did your visual aids and cited sources increase audience understanding or improve your credibility? Was your delivery energetic, calm, intense, or something else? Notice your level of eye contact with regard to the audience, your cards, and your visual aids? What did you think of your vocal delivery? What about your physical delivery?

Overall, make sure you cover the following: what do you think you did well with regard to content and delivery? What choices were you happy with in your speech? Is there anything you wish had done differently? What will you focus on improving in your next presentations?

*Reminder: These classes require thoughtful and well-developed work. This short paper should help you focus on the choices you'll be making as you put your next speeches together. Make sure that this paper has a thesis and main points reflecting your opinion of yourself as a speaker - you can start out the paper with it, or have a short intro, but don't forget to have your central ideas clarified!
