UNIT 3
Styles And Characteristics Of Leaders And Followers Introduction Becoming an effective leader is a very personal and individual experience. Each great leader carries out his or her leadership practices differently. Yet, several common leadership styles and characteristics of effective leaders have been identified through the study and theories of leadership.
In this unit, you will identify and compare your own leadership styles and characteristics with those found in the research and literature of the field. You will study the next two leadership practices presented by Kouzes and Posner: challenging the process and enabling others to act. You will consider why people follow, as an essential focus of successful leadership. You will examine to the four basic needs of followers, according to Rath and Conchie (2008).
References Kouzes, J., & Posner, B. (2012). The leadership challenge (5th ed.). San Francisco, CA: JosseyBass. Rath, T., & Conchie, B. (2008). Strengths based leadership. New York, NY: Gallup Press. Objectives To successfully complete this learning unit, you will be expected to:
1. Analyze how challenging the process and enabling others to act creates opportunities for envisioning the future and enlisting others.
2. Explain why people follow leaders. 3. Compare individual leadership styles and characteristics to what is necessary for carrying out effective leadership.
4. Analyze the environmental factors that influence leadership, such as politics, the economy, innovation, and organizational behavior.
5. Analyze the leadership styles and characteristics of a leader. 6. Plan and prepare to complete essential timesensitive tasks required for the course project.

Project Preparation If you have not already done so, begin building your final paper for the Effective Leadership Practices course project.
If you selected Option A: Interview a PersonallyKnown Leader as the subject of your course project:
Schedule your meeting with your selected leader to occur during this week, or before the end of Unit 4 at the very latest. You will need at least a week to review and summarize the interview before the final project is due at the end of Unit 5. Anticipate that your interviewee could have lastminute scheduling conflicts and you might have to reschedule to accommodate him or her. Draft your interview questions this week, before your interview appointment. Refer to the Effective Leadership Practices course project description for guidelines on creating your questions. As a courtesy to your interviewee, and to help prompt more thoughtful responses, send your interview questions to your interviewee prior to meeting with him or her.
If you selected Option B: Research a WellKnown Leader, continue to build your body of research on the individual you have chosen to study. Focus your research on addressing the types of questions presented in the Effective Leadership Practices course project description.
Contact your instructor if you have any questions about the course project.

should be an organization where you might aspire to become a leader.
Note: You cannot use the individual OR organization you are researching for your course project, due in Unit 5.
Address the following prompts:
Describe this organization and the type of products or service it provides. Add other background information, such as size, years in business, location, and reputation. Analyze the leadership styles and characteristics of the leader you selected. Compare your own individual leadership styles and characteristics to what you just described. Apply the terms from the Leadership Styles and Characteristics illustration in describing your leadership approach. What type of leader do you see yourself to be? Analyze how environmental and societal factors such as politics and innovation might influence your approach to leadership at this organization. How would these (and other factors) affect the way you lead, if at all? Would there be differences in your leadership style if you were in a different type of organization, such as a technology company or a nonprofit? Analyze how economic conditions might influence your approach to leadership. Would your leadership style change during the time of a strong economy or a declining economy? Would your style change if you were leading an organization through different maturation phases (including startup, growth, and established)?
Complete and submit your assignment as an attachment. You are also required to submit your assignment to Turnitin (Unit 3 Leadership Styles and Characteristics).
Your paper should be 3–4 pages in length and include a minimum of two sources other than your textbook.
Format your paper according to current APA style and formatting guidelines.
[u03d1] Unit 3 Discussion 1
Challenging the Process and Enabling Others to Act In your readings for this unit from The Leadership Challenge, you are introduced to the third and fourth of the five practices of effective leadership: challenge the process and enable others to act. According to Kouzes and Posner, leaders must search for opportunities, experiment and take risks, and foster collaboration, in order to challenge the process and enable others to act.
The essentials of searching for opportunities include:
Seize the initiative. Exercise outsight.
The essentials of experimenting and taking risks include:
Generate small wins. Learn from experience.

The essentials of fostering collaboration include:
Create a climate of trust. Facilitate relationships.
Describe an experience in which you had to challenge the process or enable other to act along with you, in order to accomplish a task, project, or goal.
Response Guidelines Read your peers' posts and respond to at least two. Respond to one who described similar themes to yours and one who described themes that appear to be different. In each response, include additional thoughts or reflections that further the discussion. If possible, respond to peers who have not already received feedback.

[u03d2] Unit 3 Discussion 2
Why People Follow Part One
In your readings for this unit from Strengths Based Leadership, Rath and Conchie discuss why people follow others. They ask you to consider, "Which leader has had the most positive influence in your daily life" (Rath & Conchie, p. 80)? Begin this discussion by describing the leader who has had the most positive influence in your daily life. List a minimum of three words that describe what this individual has contributed to your life. Describe this individual's contribution.
Part Two
While conducting their research, Rath and Conchie noticed a distinct pattern of recurring words that describe a follower's four basic needs: trust, compassion, stability, and hope (Rath & Conchie, 2008).
Describe a time when you had the privilege of working with a leader who met your basic followership needs. What were your basic needs, if different from the ones identified by Rath and Conchie? What did the leader do to meet your basic needs? If your needs were not met, explain why. Describe what the leader could have done differently.
Response Guidelines Read your peers' posts and respond to at least two. In each response, include additional thoughts or reflections that further the discussion. If possible, respond to peers who have not already received feedback.

Begin this discussion by describing the leader who has had the most positive influence in your daily life.
The leader who has had the most impact in my personal life would have to be my drama teacher from high school. I had moved to my third high school by my junior year, and being a teenager this was very tough. I had never gotten a chance to participate in extracurricular activities, or really gotten to express myself with friends because I was always trying to fit in. One of my courses during my junior year was drama I had been very hesitant about this class because it meant I might have to participate in a group setting more than I was used to. My teacher at the time had worked with me in the beginning letting me ease into some of the exercises that were participation based. It wasn't until one of our grading assignments that were to speak a monologue from a movie we really enjoyed. I had been practicing over and over making sure I had it just right when my teacher had given me some great advice. She told me that regardless of how I was to complete this assignment, kids were going to judge and critiques everyone. She then suggested to throw myself out there, have fun with the role, worst case scenario kids would laugh and talk about it during class then move on to the next subject. I had gotten on that stage and had a lot of fun my classmates clapped and I felt pretty dang proud of myself.
List a minimum of three words that describe what this individual has contributed to your life. Describe this individual's contribution.
Courage, personal integrity, confidence, strength. These are just a few of the words that my teacher had contributed to my life that have made a major impact both in my high school years and even in the years after. She had a very genuine way of encouraging her students, in my case she had been there for me through very challenging times in my personal life she was one person I could speak to honestly about my home life. She gave me the courage to be myself and within a few short weeks of her class, I had made more friends in my new school than I had in any previous school I attended, I had participated in several after school activities, and had for the first time accepted the reality that I may be able to go to college and be successful.
Describe a time when you had the privilege of working with a leader who met your basic followership needs.
My teacher had definitely met the four basic needs of followership she had been able to speak to me in such a way that I was able to trust her with very personal information. Her compassion for students and their needs was prevalent, it is very easy for a teach to show compassion to high school students and potentially get taken advantage of or have that compassion be abused. She was frank with her students when they were feeding her a line just to get out of something she would call them on it "one on one" of course and get to the bottom of what was really going on. Her role as a teacher offered some stability however she went above and beyond to be there for students even after school, she would often times create different group activities for students to participate so they could have a positive outlet to express themselves instead of going home and possibly getting into trouble. She gave students the opportunity to see the positive in life instead of the potential reality of failure and struggle. This sense of hope was what gave me the courage to think outside of my current life situation and set goals for much greater ambitious goals. After several years I am still working on completing and crossing off several goals I had set so long ago as a junior in high school.

When I think about "what leader has had the most positive influence in my daily life" I think my old store manager, Andrea. She was a good person, inside and out. She knew how to lead the store towards positive goals and always kept coming to work fun. If i had to list some words that describe what she has contributed to my life it would be positivity, drive, hope, stability, and love. Each one of these words not only describes her personality but also describes traits she opened my eyes too. Positivity, she always was happy and smiling. She knew that one you walk into your place of business that you leave your other stuff at the door. She never brought a bad day or bad mood into the work place, and she helped me do the same. Drive, at 25 she had been a store manager to about 5 stores, she had moved from VA Beach, to Boston, to Maryland. She never stopped working and never stopped bettering herself. She hired me at 18 and trained me just enough to have me become an assistant at the age of 20. Hope because she taught me that not everyone is going to hurt you, not everyone has it out for you and not everyone is bad. She knew I had trust issues with people, and outside of work she was one of my greatest friends. Stability, she never blindsided you with anything she always eased you into new ideas or projects. And love, outside of the work place we became very close friends. She knew to keep the friendship only outside of work and never played favoritism. To this day she isn't my boss anymore but she is still one of my very good friends.
Andrea met some of my four basic needs. I trusted her in the work place. I knew she wouldn't throw me under the boss for her own gain, and I knew she had all her employees’ backs. She had compassion. She proved this fact while my grandfather was in the hospital for a month and then passed. She was very understanding when I needed to leave early or come late. And she understood the times I just needed to be at work and not thinking of the situation. I already stated above how she gave me stability. And hope, I would not necessarily say hope is one of my four basic needs. I need more understanding. I need a manager who knows my styles of working and knows my weaknesses to help me better myself. A manager who knows how’s to speak to different people to get their points across.

Introduction
This document provides guidance in creating substantive discussion posts and providing feedback to learning peers within the context of the coursework.
Substantive Discussion Posts
At the core of all Capella courses is a public discussion of issues pertinent to the topics at hand. Typically, in each unit, your instructor will post two or three questions in the courseroom (which is where discussion takes place). You are required to respond substantively to each. You may ask, what is meant by substantively?
To understand what a substantive discussion is, remember the components of a G.R.E.A.T. post:
Grammar rules apply. Make sure your posts are written effectively. Relevance is important. Your posts should pertain to the readings, assignment or to the ongoing discussion. Engage your audience. Incorporate your interpretation of the topic or issue. Add value to the discussion. Generate questions, or provide other learners with new information. Timeliness is key. Provide your peers and instructors the opportunity to respond.
The guideline is 250 words in length, but you should regard this only as a guideline. If you have more to say about a topic, you should do so. If you have said everything that you can about a question and cannot meet the guideline, it is better to post what you have than to add irrelevant material just to get to 250 words. Your instructor is going to evaluate you on what you wrote more than on how much you wrote.
Responses to Other Learners
Capella learners bring a wealth of experiences to the course, building and engaging our courseroom learning community. As a member of the learning community, you are expected to respond to the posts of your peers. Your responses should address the substance of what was written. Learning is a social experience; others are depending on your insightfulness and contributions. A good technique is to react and ask the author of the initial post questions about what he or she wrote. This accomplishes two useful things:
You will think more carefully about what was written if you have to ask a question about it. It stimulates discussion.
You should be supportive of and encouraging to your fellow learners. If you read something that you like or that you think was well written, say so. However, simple agreement or disagreement should be accompanied by substantive reasons, examples, or evidence. Asking questions is an excellent way to encourage your peers to share that experience.
Most learners find discussion posts and responses very helpful in building their online community. Your fellow learners comprise a valuable resource for you. Typically, they are very experienced in their own fields and have a great deal to share. Most are interested in forming a scholarly network that can provide support and resources with whom to share ideas. Being part of a community of learning may be one of the

most valuable aspects of your time with Capella.
Guidelines for Effective Feedback
What Is Effective Feedback?
One of your responsibilities to yourself and your learning community is to contribute to the process of giving and receiving feedback. To help support a positive learning experience at Capella, there are guidelines for giving and receiving such feedback. Generally, exchanging effective feedback is a part of your weekly interactive learning discussions. Many courses at Capella also use a formal peer review process for giving and receiving feedback on course papers and projects.
Effective feedback:
Honors competence and reinforces behaviors. Aligns expectations and course work priorities. Fills gaps in knowledge. Supports individuals to take corrective action. Directs individuals toward meeting learning goals.
Giving Feedback
The following is a list of tips for giving effective feedback:
Plan your feedback. Making notes first may help you decide what you want to say and how you want to say it. Focus on the work. Address the ideas shared, and avoid personal comments. Be specific. If something is not working, identify it and describe why. Suggest alternatives. Acknowledge what works well. Offer praise. Be courteous and truthful. Ask questions for clarity. Acknowledge valid points of view. Agree with what is true. Explain yourself. Go beyond, “good point!” Elaborate your comments with concisely written paragraphs.
Receiving Feedback
The following is a list of tips for receiving effective feedback:
Listen at all times, even in an online environment. Be receptive to what others have to say. Ponder what is said. Challenge your work. Prioritize the feedback you receive. Some learners use green, yellow, and red to categorize their revisions according to importance. Remember that not everyone has to agree with your work. It is okay for others to challenge it.

Ask yourself the following questions when participating in the class dialogue, to improve the quality of the courseroom discussion and to support team learning:
1. Does my contribution fit with the dialogue, or should I start a separate discussion? 2. Are my ideas logically organized into an argument, and written in clear and mechanically clean prose?
3. Am I expressing worthwhile ideas, or do they just take up space? 4. Is the central thesis statement clear (whether direct or implied)? 5. Can the reader easily determine what my main point is? 6. Does it provide sufficient, relevant, and interesting details? 7. Are there sufficient explanations or examples to support any generalizations? 8. Does this contribution provide a series of points that add up to an argument supporting the main point (thesis)?
9. Does the contribution proceed logically from point to point? 10. Are there any contradictions? Is the paragraph structure logical? 11. Are there appropriate transitions words between ideas? Does it flow? 12. Have I followed the courseroom etiquette? 13. Is my point of view clear? 14. Is the tone appropriate and respectful of others' ideas? 15. Do the hyperlinks work and follow the correct format? 16. Is the writing punctuated appropriately? 17. Is my contribution concise, precise, and free of grammatical errors? 18. Are words spelled correctly? 19. If I referenced other authors, did I provide the appropriate citation?
