Students will choose a short excerpt / quote from one of the readings of that week, type it in, then add a short (150 words or so) explanation for your choice. Was your selection important because it:

· is an example of beautiful or striking language?

· exemplifies a particular theme or character?

· makes the reader think about something in a new way?

· is typically "American" in some way (and in what way)?

· was just something that you liked?

Try not to use the same quote that some student else already has; if you must, make sure that what you say about it is original.

For example:

"My country is the world, and my religion is to do good."  Thomas Paine.

I chose this quote because I think it is a good example of Enlightenment thought which was very popular during the late 1700's.  Paine is rejecting formal ties to any specific country or any particular religion (humanist world view).  He is focused on the here and now, not an afterlife, and this concern is evident in his writing about social and political systems that influenced the thinkers behind the American Revolution.  The language is simple and straightforward.

Bradford’s relationship with god seems that of trusting nature. He believes if they believe in god and the Christian faith they will get through this “Politic” of forming a new colony. “ In the presence of God, into a civil body of politic, for our better ordering and preservation and furtherance of the ends aforesaid;” This leads me to believe that is trusting in god to guide his colony through this tough ordeal of commanding a colony.

Since she came over to the English colony life was filled with hardships and sacrifices. Her tale of “Before the Birth of One of Her Children” reads a passage “No ties so strong, no friends so dear and sweet, But with death’s parting blow is sure to meet.” Bradstreet seems frightened of death but accepting because in her words she says “Yet love thy dead, whose long lay in thine arms”. She is accepting of her fate.

Edward Taylor’s poems pretty tough to read. From my understanding he seemed trusting in god. He believe he would be forgiven for any sins and that he was his savior. “Affections, judgment, conscience, memory, My words and actions, that their shine may fill.” Here he states that he is trusting god to forgive him for his above mentioned human nature.
