As a surrealist photographer, Lee Friedlander’s work has a strong visually impact and and spiritual impact to audience. He uses his surrealist style to represent a chaotic and crazy United State to us, especially his work- a series of the glass window.

Surrealism also called “surreal”, “super-rational” dreams, hallucinations as a source of artistic creation. Artists thought that beyond the reality, only “unconscious” can get rid of all shackles of the world and it can give human the realistic facts. Surrealism bring a deep influence of traditional art.

Lee Friedlander is a creative photographer whose born in Washington. He is catching a moment of city life as famous. His work is different from other peoples’ because his work is visually and full of aesthetic philosophy.

By recording daily life and observed the phenomena of the world, he established his own style, he looks like an outsider who try to find a point and balance to connect the real and the unreal world. His work looks like very random, actually, it is well thought out. He often took advantage of porch, windows and lampposts structure to dividing photos and he rendering the atmosphere to make people and scenery become incredible.

One series of his work is glass window which means that he selects plastic model who stand in the showcase, and he uses reflect lights and combine the model’s figure with the surrounding together. It looks like add a second layer to the plastic model.

For example, his work bed in window-Cincinnati, Ohio. Constitute a related object by reflection in the window and outside the window, however, in this work, the picture is mystery and very absurd. The display in the window is a luxurious interior furnishing, and constitute a relatively stable, harmonious space. However, a real life harmony has been crushed by glass window. Because on the top of the furniture is refracted in street construction and indifferent sky, it causes that the original warm and pleasant dream home into a noisy chaos of the streets.

In another aspect, the visual sense of this photo is very strong, he divided into two part of this photo, the upper and lower. The overall color of the upper part is very dark and make people feel depressed. He used dark tone to reflect the reality of the society. In the lower side, the “unreal” things inside window are bright. The contrast between dark and light, the real and unreal are very fantastic. He shows us how pathetic stubborn, miserable and exhausted of United State. His pictures like a short poem which full of hate, and it has made bitter and funny observation of social landscape.

Friedlander consciously to an observe the three-dimensional world in a state of chaos and shape. He let humble objects into a surreal psychological experience and given us a sense of failure, to prevent viewer to see through the psychological experience rather than to reveal the photographer injected theme.
