[Need a title]
In 1984 [novel title must be italizied], Julia and Winston are both very different people. Winston is determined to destroy big Big brother Brother [this needs to be capitalized] while Julia deals with it. They are also different in terms of experience, age and outlook on life. Both of these characters have different motivations in life and are both struggling to fulfill these. This essay will examine Julia and Winston’s personal view of big brother and how their motivations for taking the party down differ.[Avoid a thesis that starts “This essay will...” You need a strong thesis statement that presents your position on the topic and suggests how you’ll support that position. This essay isn’t simply a comparison of the two characters. You’re asked to consider how they are complementary. You’re missing that focus here.]
It is clear Winston is trying to figure out the world he is living in it and questions it. All he knows is big brother and that is he is constantly being watched by ‘’them’’. Winston is a very rebellious like man, he. He has a journal which he writes “DOWN WITH BIG BROTHER.”[citation?] Winston is aware of what he is doing is wrong but due to his paranoia he already thinks he will be tortured for this. [Is it really paranoia?] Winston works for the ministry of truth; his job is to change the history just liketo how the party wants it to be seen. Although we [avoid the use of the first-person perspective: I, we, us] think Winston is happy with his job early on in the book he starts to doubt the party and is against the party’s restrictions. As the story progresses his hate for the party increases and that is when he buys the diary. This shows us the reader that Winston is developing as a character and also that he is becoming courageous. A diary is considered bad in this society because you are putting down your own personal thoughts which the party can’t control. Although Winston has no memory of the past, occupies himself by figuring out what the party is trying to hide. You can say that Winston is simply unaware of what is going on around him. Winston really starts to change when he meets Julia who is a rebellious young woman who unlike Winston just downright hates big brother.[Be sure you’re doing what you set out to do and supporting the correct thesis, Harrison. You’re simply describing Winston and presenting plot summary here. This isn’t what this essay requires you to do. You need to compare the characters and determine if and how they are complementary. Be sure you’re essay structure is supporting this. Consider how you’ll compare the characters and how these contrasting aspects of the characters allow them to complement one another. You must use direct evidence from the novel to support your analysis as well.] Comment by Stephanie Casemore: capitalize
Julia, like Winston, hates the party but knows that she hates it, unlike Winston who is still skeptical.[Can you provide evidence that shows Winston is skeptical? I wouldn’t call him skeptical.] She is well planned and strategized for rebelling against the party.[really? Her rebellion is quite personal and only relates to how she wants to live her life. She’s not really interested in rebellion on any significant scale.] Julia tends to sleep around with other party members, which is strictly against their rules, but Winston is okay with that showing a similarity between the two. [Winston is okay with what? He certainly doesn’t “sleep around” so that is not a similarity.] While both of them share the desire to take down Big brother, there is a major difference why they are rebelling. Winston fantasizes almost every day about taking down the party, . Julia is almost like a rebel without a cause as she does not care what the party is doing. We know this because when Winston is explaining all the faults and lies in the party Julia tends not to listen which results in calling her a rebel from the wastewaist down. What could be one of the biggest differences between Winston and Julia is that she is a young energetic twenty – six-year-old while Winston is an aging thirty-nine-year-old. Despite the age it does not stop Julia and Winston from forming a relationship and working to take down Big brother. Winston slightly remembers the past and is doing all he can to figure out more about while Julia only remembers a rhyme her grandfather taught her before he was killed. It is clear that Winston has more motivations to hating the party rather Julia. Their romantic relationship at first was an act of political rebellion but turned into a personal care for each other. This shows their character development throughout that they learn to feel emotions for one another which is against the party. With their loving relationship Winston starts to gain confidence in himself which is a strength for his rebel against the party. It seems that with Julia Winston believes that it is their love that keeps them from breaking down under the party’s rule. I Comment by Stephanie Casemore: unclear Comment by Stephanie Casemore: ?
In conclusion Julia and Winston both have their own views on why the Big brother should be stopped. Winston truly wants to bring down Big brother and has multiple explanations why, while Julia knows nothing about the past and just wants to take the party down for the fun of it. She does not truly understand the full concept of what she is rebelling against, nor does she care. Despite the multiple differences between the two Winston and Julia both love each other and are willing to risk being caught by big brother.
Some things to work on in your revision:
1. The thesis and focus of the essay: You need to address the question of whether they are complementary characters.
2. Evidence: You must have direct textual evidence to support your arguments.
3. Think about the organization of your body: You should have a minimum of three body paragraphs, each directly supporting your thesis. You might focus these on three different areas the characters differ and connect that to the ways they complement each other. Be sure you have strong topic sentences that present a clear argument.
4. Mechanics: I’ve pointed out some errors early on and you’ll need to go through the essay to correct those errors throughtout.
Be sure to include proper MLA citations and a Works Cited in your final essay.
