Communication skills are crucial for development of success in leadership roles, which requires understanding relationship between verbal and nonverbal communication, intercultural communication, and improvement competencies. Both verbal and non-verbal information are used to convey messages when interacting in social groups (Proverbio, 2014). Communication is all over the place. People cannot keep away from communication, and everyone will participate in some form of communication almost every moment of the day, whether it is through verbal or non-verbal communication. The capacity to effectively communicate will improve and advance lives.

Verbal communication is called language ( reference ) Verbal communication is fundamental in almost everything that people do, from doing a good job at work to identifying with companions and relatives. Both written work and talking depend on the utilization of dialect. Language is a gathering of symbols, letters, or words used to convey messages to another entity.

Non-Verbal communication is the procedure of utilizing silent messages to produce meaning ( reference ). Communication is unpredictable. Even though nonverbal communication cannot be measured against verbal communication, nonverbal correspondence gives substantially more importance than what people realize. When individuals are not positive about someone else’s sentiments or inclination about another person, people depend more on nonverbal suggestions, such as body language, rather than the words that are used ( reference ).

Body language is the way a person moves their body when engaged in conversation. Body language include: facial expressions, posture, and gestures. These bodily movements are called kinesics ( reference ). Actions speak louder than words meaning when an individual’s words are saying one thing but their body movements are saying something different. One form of kinesics are called regulators. Regulators are non-verbal motions that control the stream or pace of correspondence. This form of body movement regulates the conversation by moving away when the other person is still talking, letting them know the conversation is over to hurry up and finish talking. Instead of looking at the person, people tend to look down or turn away when not intrigued, yawning and checking the time when exhausted.

Another form of kinesics are called adaptors. This too is another type of nonverbal body movement. Adaptors are behaviors that fulfill a personal need, such as scratching, moving the body to a more comfortable position, rubbing eyes when tired. People are usually less mindful when it comes to these bodily movements. Adaptors are also called nervous habits. These movements include: twirling hair, pulling on the ear, swinging legs, nose scratching, or repositioning glasses on the face. Adaptors are not planned in communication, they are considered more of a habit that is learned or nervous habits that increase when the anxiety of the situation increases ( reference ).

For effective communication between two people or an audience, both verbal and non-verbal communication are crucial for the success of conveying messages to one person or to a group of people. When giving a presentation or a speech, using words along with the correct body movements are important when trying to persuade an audience. Bodily movements will give the presentation some excitement and keep the audience entertained and interested. When the same message is given verbally and non-verbally it is called, repeating ( reference ). This is where bodily movements need to match the content that is spoken. When asked a yes or no question, the person responding to the question may answer with no as they are shaking their head from side to side, matching the verbal answer to the non-verbal answer, and nodding their head up and down with the yes response. Outward appearances are critical in passing on data to others and in realizing what others are feeling. When a person can watch and translate both facial expressions and body language, they pick up a more full comprehension of the other person’s message.

Contradicting happens when the words that are spoken do not match bodily movements ( reference ). In the event that a supervisor made one of their employees angry, the employee may say everything is fine, however the real developments and outward appearance may release the real emotions through body language. Therefore, the words give one message, but the nonverbal conveyance tells how the employee really feels.

Intercultural communication is a form of communication that intends to share data with cultures and social groups with different religious, social, ethnic, and educational backgrounds. In some cultures audience members show respect when they deflect their eyes, in other cultures they show respect by directly looking at the person. It is important to listen actively when the other person is speaking. Active listening is a form of effective communication. Listening to the other person closely, will give the listener a better understanding of the situation.

Respecting differences is also important when it comes to intercultural communication. Everyone has different opinions, values, religious beliefs, educational and ethnic backgrounds. Different cultures have different religious beliefs, what one person may believe in their religion may not be the belief of someone else. When people think of different cultures, they assume people from other countries, but everyone is brought up in a different environment and have their own beliefs, what they were taught as a child.

Communication competence is the capacity to choose a communication process that is suitable for a given circumstance. How to improve communication competence is in information, expertise, and inspiration. Learning just means realizing what conduct is most appropriate for a given circumstance. Expertise is being able to apply that conduct in the given situation. Inspiration is having the desire in an effective and appropriate manner.

In conclusion, communication comes is different forms either verbally or non-verbally. Communication can improve with increased knowledge and practice. To be a capable communicator, a person must have the ability to perceive which skills are appropriate for a given situation and be appropriately prepared to utilize those skills.
