History:

Instructions:

The prompt is to write about a time when you challenged authority (this can be person in a position of authority over you or an institution that has authority in society). You will then explain how you challenged the authority, and then compare the authority you challenged to one of the major institutions of the Medieval era.

N0TE: You can use on- line sources like the History Network or even Wikipedia to inform yourself about medieval institutions.

The essay will look like example. You will not write the same thing, I just put the example to get an idea.

It is going to be 1 page without double space.

EXAMPLE :

A time in my life when I challenged authority, would be with my dad. He has an authoritative role above me and he tells me what he believes is the right thing I should do for me to be successful. Thinking back to a time I challenged his authority would be when I was doing homework and I was listening to music softly while I was doing it. He works in a different way as me and believes that music will distract me and I won’t be able to focus or put my best effort towards the assignment. I challenged his opinion because I believe music actually helps me focus more and that I do better and work faster while I have music softly playing in the background, and gives me the energy and motivation to complete what I am doing. Also there are studies that prove that certain types of music can help calm nerves and your body to help you focus. Using music with in the right way and with the right techniques, can actually benefit you in the end. Everyone have different techniques they use to study or complete work, and some strategies work well for people and some of those strategies don’t work well for people and they complete the work in a different way that works best for them. How I went about challenging him, was calmly stating my opinion of the matter and backed up my point on why I think this strategy will benefit me. Stating real examples and studies that represent and back up my opinion that I gave. Also showing that I was able to finish all the homework and studying I needed to complete in a timely manner and at the best effort that I could. I believed as a whole, that music helps me, so it lead me to challenging his authority because I wanted to continue to do what I thought helped me the most to complete my tasks and I thought was right.

To compare/contrast my situation of challenging my dad’s authority, would go along with the early modern time period because in this period of time no one sees anything wrong for standing up for what someone thinks they are right about. People will challenge anyone if they think they are right in the situation and want to be heard. In my situation I thought I was right with what I was doing so I challenged his authority and fought for what I believed would be more beneficial for me. Back in the medieval time period, for example, challenging the Catholic Church was frowned upon. There was no such thing, as challenging the authority of the church and going against what they believe. Everyone followed what was said and no one ever went against it, and that’s just the system people followed.  Now in modern time it is the opposite of that, and if people believe they have a different opinion than what is said, people will stand up and fight for what they believe should be done, instead of just sitting back and keeping quiet. Challenging an authority is much different between periods of time, and how people should treat someone who has higher power than them. That shows how much can change in time and how society has changed as a whole.
