Week 10
March 28, 2016
Review requirements for the book analysis due next week - can do either online or paper.
Last week’s focus was on Emotional Abuse as well as the initial phases of what happens when a case of CAN is reported to CPA
This evening - shift focus a bit and talk about prevention as April will be Child Abuse Prevention Month -
When working with a family - particularly families who are part of the Alternative Assessment Response - will be looking at risk as well as protective factors.
Protective Factors
Nurturing and Attachment
Knowledge of Parenting and Child Development
Parental Resilience
Social Connections
Concrete Support for the Family
Social and Emotional Competence of Children
Protective factors are conditions or attributes of individuals, families, communities, or the larger society that reduce or eliminate risk and promote healthy development and well-being of children and families. These factors help ensure that children and youth function well at home, in school, at work, and in the community, today and into adulthood. Protective factors also can serve as buffers, helping parents who might otherwise be at risk of abusing their children to find resources, supports, or coping strategies that allow them to parent effectively, even under stress. Research has found that successful interventions must both reduce risk factors and promote protective factors to ensure child and family well-being. There is growing interest in understanding the complex ways in which these risk and protective factors interact within the context of a child’s family, community, and society to affect both the incidence and consequences of child abuse and neglect.
Protective Factors Survey
For some programs - use the Protective Factors Survey to measure if parents who are in an intervention program or educational program have gains in their knowledge and skills to guide programs and staff in their work with families.
Survey is a handled through a partnership with the Friends National Resource Center
Survey looks at the 6 Protective factor as is used as a pre and post assessment for participants in Prevention/Intervention Services.
