Week 6 - Power and emotions
Power consists of attitudes, perceptions, beliefs, and behaviors that give people and groups the ability to act effectively.
Resist Using Negative Power……….
Power, like conflict, can be seen as a ugly word
It corrupts when it is misused
It can be positive when used effectively
The conflict partnership is active, creative, empowering, transforming
Negative Power
Six Characteristics
Take another’s power
Gain advantage over another
Ignore the negative impact on the relationship
Power over rather power with relationship
Seesaw power (adversarial, win/lose)
Often backfires
Positive Power
Seeks to promote and energize the other person’s capabilities
Power with; not power over
Avoids seesaw power
Weakening another will not make me stronger
Successful resolution requires all parties to be have positive power
Developing Positive Self Power
Having a clear self-image
Those introspective exercises
Having a clear understanding of our own values
Are our values and behaviors consistent
To thine own self be true
Being in charge of yourself
Not controlled by anger, fear, blame
Positive Self Power…..
Learn and apply effective relationship and conflict resolution skills
Do not allow others to push your buttons
Shared Positive Power
The power of “our” and “we”
Together we are stronger than each of us is individually
SHARED POSITIVE POWER ENERGIZES THE RELATIONSHIP…..IT FLOWS FROM A PARTNERSHIP ATMOSPHERE, FROM CLARIFIED PERCEPTIONS OF SELF, THE CONFLICT PARTNER, AND THE RELATIONSHIP, AND SHARED NEEDS
SUCCESSES AND FAILURES
An impasse may not indicate failure
You may have improved your self-awareness, self-confidence, and integrity
What did you learn from the process?
You cannot change the other person
You can only change yourself and your reaction
COMING ATTRACTIONS
Next week, we will study the art of dialogue in negotiation. Dialogue and debate are different practices, yet many times negotiations turn into debates. The golden key that opens and expands all areas of conflict management, including negotiation, is communication. So easy, yet so difficult.
