When we talk about the problems that are facing the world these days. We come up with many problems such as global warming, terrorism, and poverty. Poverty is one of the most important problems that are facing the world, and many countries can’t find any solution to end this problem. Poverty can be described as the lack of minimum basic human needs such as food and shelter. Studies have stated that more than 35 million Americans are living in poverty(1). There are two main reasons that cause poverty; lack of education and poor environment. On the other hand, the top two effects of poverty are health problems and lack of education. The world should stand united and find a very effective solutions for this problems because poverty doesn’t affect the poor people themselves it affect the society and other people around the world.
First, Lack of education leads people to not have a very good job opportunity with a good salary. Lacking a good job, people will find some difficulties taking care of their basic wants, and the little that they earn is spent in their bills it doesn’t go to their needs. A student who came from low-income families tends to get a lower score in their academic studies regardless their family situation and some of the students quit going to school and go outside to work in any job. According to a study by Sum and Fogg (1991) found that students who are from low-income families scored below the average percentile “ low-income students scored about 30% but the middle-income student scored about 45%, and the upper-income students scored 70% in their school.” (Sum & Fogg,1991)(3). So, the low-income student doesn’t do very well in the school because of their situation.
Secondly, the environment that one lives in can influence them to stay in poverty. People who live in an environment don’t encourage each other to be more successful. They do not encourage them to do well in his/her school in fact give them bad habits to do every day like stealing or doing some drugs. As a result, the person will have facing problems in their lives because the poor environment will make the person less motivated in his/her live and won’t develop people. Also, he/she will do some things people shouldn’t do especially if they are in an age that wouldn’t let them thinking about their lives clearly. For example, some people who they think they lost hope in life will use drugs to help them forget about their bad condition that they find themselves in. Also, they will try to sell drugs to other people to get money from selling drugs. Of course, everyone knows how drugs are bad for the people whose consuming drugs, for their families, for the society, and for the country. Also, poverty can lead to enhance diseases and make the crime percentage get higher than before. Poverty makes individuals thinks they are in life or death condition, and there is no way to be out of this condition. Furthermore, they try to find legal or illegal ways to help them support themselves and their families. Unfortunately, many of poor people go to the illegal ways because it’s easier for them and they have nothing to lose. So, they will commit crimes like stealing from people or killing people for money or selling drugs.
After explaining the causes of Poverty let’s see how poverty can have serious effects. When children are living in poverty, their healthcare quality will be challenging. In most cases, poverty will make the children go for the poor quality of healthcare because of the financial difficulties. Studies have shown that infants living in poverty have low birth weights as well as mental and physical disabilities. Poor health can make the children fall sick more often, and it has been discovered that they are more likely to die before reaching their first birthday. Also, illness can further make poor children miss school more often. There is also a higher rate of accidents when compared to the other children not living in poverty. Moreover, they are more likely to suffer from impaired vision as well as hearing impairment, deficiency in iron and can as well have an impaired brain function.
Poverty can cause a family to be stressed in taking care of their daily life needs. When in stress, a person can recess from their current jobs. The poor families are more stressed that the middle-class families. Violence has also been influenced by stress that is caused by poverty. The poor families are also suffering from negative events or bad luck. They will experience depression, job loss, criminal victimization, eviction and even death of a family member. The parents who are living in poverty will be more punitive, insulting and be involved in corporal punishment.
Documentation has been made which links poverty with academic performance. The documentation has been studies the start in the early life of the children. It has been discovered that readiness to school, which include entry to the kindergarten has an effect on the success of the child. Studies have stated that American students who have started school behind their peers cannot be able to close the readiness gap. The readiness gap continues to increase as their advance through their education system. According to The Virginia Kindergarten Readiness Project “School readiness has been shown to be predictive of virtually every education benchmark. In the United States, it has been estimated that 30 to 40% of the children who are entering kindergarten are not ready for school.” The study shows how children aren’t getting enough education that makes them compete with other children especially the children who came from unstable financial back ground family.(4)
In conclusion, I believe most people around the world doesn’t deserve to be poor. Countries around the world can do a lot to help those people who are in need. Most of the countries aren’t doing any significant action towards this problem, which is something awful because many people affected by this problem, and people are dying because of it. Also, if any government doesn’t do anything to fight poverty, the crime percentage will increase. Poverty can be caused by several factors such as lack of education that leads to one to securing a better employment opportunity, low income and one’s concern for the future. As a result, poverty causes poor healthcare, poor education, and homelessness.
