What should it do?

COLLAPSE

Within the first five days of the system going live, the biggest items that have to be managed are whether the information that was entered prior to the start date was migrated into the new system and that the runners that are logging into the system are able to properly register for the races they are wanting to without any issues.  The system also has to be monitored to ensure that the information pertaining to the different races is available and accurate for registration.  If the system is unable to provide this, corrective maintenance may need to be conducted by the information technology (IT) department to ensure the system is operating as it was intended to operation.

At the four week point, the system needs to be monitored so that it allows the guest accounts that will be linked to the runner and a particular race so that friends and family can monitor the racer’s progress on the course. With this, the system has to be able to accept real-time information from the event’s tracking and timing system in order to update the racer’s location and time. At the completion of the race, the system needs to be able to update the racer’s statistics and start building a progression report about the racer for each race. If problems are identified, either adaptive or perfective maintenance may need to be conducted.  Adaptive maintenance can make minor or a major change to the system to make it easier to use but not change the entire system whereas perfective maintenance would all but change the entire system (Rosenblatt, 2014). Both types of maintenance procedures are time consuming and would require more IT support than corrective maintenance procedures.

At the six month mark, the system should be able provide a report, based on race results, to the runner. If the system is unable to provide these reports, corrective or adaptive maintenance may be required to correct the problem.  If the statistics are being maintained for the runner, then it might be a simple fix to get the report to generate.  However, if the system is not matching race results to the runner, then it may require a bigger fix, but not a complete change to the system.
