PART I: FUEL AND THE ENVIRONMENT

Environmental protection is one of the key concerns in the world today. A lot of research has been done and is still ongoing on interventions that will ensure environmental protection and management. Measures have been put in place in safeguarding the environment in order to assure future generations. New mechanisms are being engineered to alternatively offer the same benefits but at a relatively low costs and in an environmentally friendly way. Alternative energy sources such as geothermal, solar energy, hydroelectric and wind power resources have gained more significance as their impact on the environment is less harmful Means Theory. (n.d.).

Utilitarianism theory best explains the environmental protection issue. According to the philosopher John Sturt Mill, the best action is the one that yields more benefits to the majority of the population in society Postigo, G. (2015). This theory considers a moral good to be the one that is directed to advantage a huge population. By application of utilitarianism in solving this problem, measures aimed at protecting humanity from environmental pollution are deemed morally well. Logically, actions that are considered to prevent environmental pollution are morally good. This theory provides the best possible course of actions which are most likely to benefit a larger society. It is therefore justifiable to apply this theory in the ethical context that require rational decision making since it is non-individualistic in nature as it focuses on society at large and not just a few individuals or groups. Also the argument raised by John Sturt Mill is that it is morally right to sacrifice individualistic interests for the sake of society. This implies that those actions most likely to impact positive changes to the majority should be undertaken even if they are likely bring negative changes to the minority. For example such few countries likely to exercise security actions using harmful ammunitions should be sanctioned from doing so to benefit the majority nations from suffering even if the few nations may suffer security threats Postigo, G. (2015).

Environmental protection should be lifted to benefit the society. Basing on the utilitarianism theory, it is morally good to protect, safeguard and sustain the environment. Actions such as putting up policies and laws against environmental pollution are considered morally right. Measures such as those limiting businesses, governments and even individuals from exercising those activities deemed harmful to environment can be considered morally upright. As articulated by this theory, focus should be shifted to the greatest good most likely to benefit the majority populations. It is therefore justifiable in application of utilitarianism approach in solving the issue of environmental protection.
