4. Near accurate time and cost estimation are extremely important for any project to be successful. Assuming you have been asked to estimate the cost and time for this project, critically evaluate the applicability and suitability of different type of estimation methods.

Sol: To complete the software project and deliver the product in defined budget of cost and time the accurate cost and time estimation is mandatory. If the estimated time and cost are not accurate then the project which has been initiated to develop the software product will fail during the development phase. There are so many cost and time estimation method for the software project. These all cost and time estimation methods are core aspects of the software project management. The applicability and suitability of cost and time estimation for the given software project is summarized under the given under the following tables.

Cost and time estimation suitability & applicability

Software cost consists of three different elements such as manpower, effort and duration. The manpower is associated with engineering and management people involved in development, effort is associated with engineering and management efforts required to complete inclined project and duration is amount of time required to complete the project. Time is considered usually as in month.

1

Expert Judgment method

The cost is estimated by capturing the knowledge and experience of estimator of the similar projects in which it has participated.

As the there is no knowledge of cost estimation Thus this model is not applicable

Not suitable for the given project

2

Top Down Method

With this method the global view of the product is taken and then partitioned into many low level components. The Putnam method of cost estimation follow this methodology.

The product is not available and new system has to be developed so this model for cost and time estimation is not applicable

Not suitable for the given project

3

Bottom UP method

The cost of each components are estimated first and then the whole are added into single entity to get final estimated cost. Cocomo detailed follows this method

Components are not known so not applicable

Not suitable for the given project

4

Estimation by Analogy

The actual data from previous completed projects of similar application domain are taken to utilize for the estimation of current project cost.

No previous completed project is available so not applicable

Not suitable as the given project is new.

5

Price to win Estimation Method

A contract is defined and final price is given to contractor to build the product.

No experience with executive to define price so not applicable

Not suitable to estimate the cost and time for given project

6

Cocomo Method

Constructive cost model is cost estimation method based on algorithmic model where the mathematical equations are taken to estimate the cost of the software project. By this method the effort and time schedule of the software project are estimated. The input of the estimates are SLOC, Function Points and Object Points

Small and simple project cost can be estimated by this method so, not applicable for given project

Not suitable for given project

7

Cocomo 81 Method

This cost estimation is same as the constructive cost model but instead of SLOC, FP and OP KDSI in thousands are taken to estimate the cost of software project. There are three different models for cost estimation of software project under Cocomo 81. These are basic, intermediary and advanced models. Basic model is applied at beginning and gives the rough estimate of the project cost. Intermediate is used to estimate the project cost if more details of the project is available. Advanced model is used when the project is in complete stage. This is applied to further refine the estimate of the project cost.

Following equations are used to estimate the cost of project.

1. PM (Person Month) = a(KDSI)b * EAF (Effort adjustment factor)

2. TDEV (Time to development = c(PM)d

Where the value of a,b,c and d are predefined in a table and taken from that table.

As the cost and time estimation by this method is based upon the estimate of Person month and time to development by defined adjustment factors of effort and the project is like an organic project due to new in nature so applicable for given project to estimate the cost and time.

This method is suitable for the given project

Cocomo II method

Constructive cost model for project cost estimation uses LOC (Line of Code) to estimate the cost and time for the software project. There are standards set out by SEI for proper counting of lines, things like if/then/else statements would be counted as one line (there are automated tools that will do the counting for you when you want to collect data from your own code).

There are 17 cost drivers used in Cocomo II cost estimation model.

The cost drivers are as follows.

Product Factors

RELY- Required Software Reliability

DATA - Data Base Size

CPLX - Product Complexity

RUSE - Required Reusability

DOCU - Documentation match to life-cycle needs

Platform Factors

TIME - Execution Time Constraint

STOR - Main Storage Constraint

PVOL - Platform Volatility

Personnel Factors

ACAP - Analyst Capability

PCAP - Programmer Capability

AEXP - Applications Experience

PEXP - Platform Experience

LTEX - Language and Tool Experience

PCON - Personnel Continuity

Project Factors

TOOL - Use of Software Tools

SITE - Multisite Development

SCED - Required Development Schedule

This model is based on LOC to estimate the cost and time of development of software product. So it is also suited for the given project

7. Prepare a weighted decision matrix using the template provided on portal to evaluate the functions you identified above in task 6. Develop at least four criteria, assign weights to each criterion, assign scores, and then calculate the weighted scores for each function and prepare the spreadsheet and bar chart with the results. Write a short report describing this weighted decision matrix and what the results show.

The given weighted decision matrix has the decision factors and criteria. The criteria are weighted with number factors. The criteria is defined with following facts.

Ease of customization: How the quickly the site design is customized without resorting to CSS.

Page load speed : How does a typical page is loaded from a theme

SEO support: How much flexibility and support are provided in area of search engine optimization

Font support: How many built in font are available and how much guidance are available on typography

The assigned weight gives the score for the given criteria and decision factors defines the score from weighted score with different choices.

Finally, weighted score gives the overall score of the decision factor based result of the website score.

13. How can the above unfortunate situation with Bill be solved? Write a short report with several alternatives and suggestions to meet up with John.

Sol: Above mentioned situation with team member Bill causes the delay in the project finalization. As, the project work has gone to 2 months and next 4 months are required to finalize the project to produce the product. As Bill has to take 4 months rest then the tasks associated with Bill to complete in defined schedule will not be completed if Bill does not work with those tasks. Hence, the delay is caused and it may also be possible that the project will fail in future.

In this case John has to consider the alternative to complete the project in next 4 months scheduled time. There are various alternatives in which one of them can be selected by John to complete the project in 4 months scheduled time. All of the alternatives are as follows.

· Employ a new member on the position of Bill for Four Months : This alternative has scope for a john to adopt to complete the project in defined time. This requires the quick schedule of interview and selection of appropriate member. In this regard John can consult the outsourcing company to hire the member and then assign the tasks associated with Bill. The detailed decription of tasks are explained by taking extra time for work by John to explore all the past and current aspects of the project work.

· Re-Schedule the rest of tasks to available members: The rescheduling of rest of project work can be taken by John to complete the project work in deadline. The rescheduling of task requires the members to give more efforts in defined time schedule.

· Consult the third party to perform the job of bill: Third party such as development company etc can also be consulted by John to get the work done in given time frame and then add the work of Bill to main project.

· Extend the time of finalization of project: John can stop the project and wait for four months for Bill to recover and then come back to work with assigned works or tasks with the project. This alternative is costly for the John as the project finalization will be late for four months and this may cause the loss.

16. You have been asked to chair these meetings and send a memo to all employees emphasizing their commitment and the strategic importance of this project to making it a success. Draft a short memo to this effect.

Sol: A short memo draft for all the employees emphasizing their commitment and strategic importance of the project to make success by John is drafted as follows.

To

Employees (Project Members)

From

John

Date: 30-04-2016

Subject: A meeting for selecting the criteria to complete the project without hiring employee instead of Bill and advancing any cost.

As we all know that Bill is in rest for four months due to unavoidable reason. The policy of our company does not allow us to hire any employee to replace him. The company policy is so good that it understands the value of employee. The project work is in middle state and its needs to complete the rest of project work through available members of the project. Hence, it is call for the opinion for decision making about how the best way is selected to complete the rest of the project work without increasing cost and in previous scheduled time.

It also requires the cooperation of available employee to complete the rest of project works in scheduled time. So, how the work is redistributed among us are needed to be discussed among us to define the best possible way to get the optimal solution

The meeting is schedule at 11:00 A.M on 1st May, 2016 in ground loop hall. So, we will meet there on mentioned schedule. Your cooperation and efforts are required too much

Sicerely,

John

Team Lead.

19. Prepare a short presentation with ten to fifteen slides that you could use at the final project presentation to summarize the results of the project. Assume that you have fifteen to twenty minutes to give the presentation. Highlight the main challenges, actions taken, and results of the project.

Sol: The Power point presentation is attached separately with file name spm.pptx
